The Woman and the Dragon

1 Then a great and mysterious sight appeared in the sky. There was a woman, whose dress was the sun and who had the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.2 She was soon to give birth, and the pains and suffering of childbirth made her cry out.
3 Another mysterious sight appeared in the sky. There was a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and a crown on each of his heads.4 With his tail he dragged a third of the stars out of the sky and threw them down to the earth. He stood in front of the woman, in order to eat her child as soon as it was born.5 Then she gave birth to a son, who will rule over all nations with an iron rod. But the child was snatched away and taken to God and his throne.6 The woman fled to the desert, to a place God had prepared for her, where she will be taken care of for 1, 260 days.
7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, who fought back with his angels;8 but the dragon was defeated, and he and his angels were not allowed to stay in heaven any longer.9 The huge dragon was thrown out—that ancient serpent, named the Devil, or Satan, that deceived the whole world. He was thrown down to earth, and all his angels with him.
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven saying,
        Now God's salvation has come! Now God has shown his power as King! Now his Messiah has shown his authority! For the one who stood before our God and accused believers day and night has been thrown out of heaven.11 They won the victory over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the truth which they proclaimed; and they were willing to give up their lives and die.12 And so be glad, you heavens, and all you that live there! But how terrible for the earth and the sea! For the Devil has come down to you, and he is filled with rage, because he knows that he has only a little time left.
  
13 When the dragon realized that he had been thrown down to the earth, he began to pursue the woman who had given birth to the boy.14 She was given the two wings of a large eagle in order to fly to her place in the desert, where she will be taken care of for three and a half years, safe from the dragon's attack.15 And then from his mouth the dragon poured out a flood of water after the woman, so that it would carry her away.16 But the earth helped the woman; it opened its mouth and swallowed the water that had come from the dragon's mouth.17 The dragon was furious with the woman and went off to fight against the rest of her descendants, all those who obey God's commandments and are faithful to the truth revealed by Jesus.18 And the dragon stood[a] on the seashore.

Revelation 13

The Two Beasts

1 Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads; on each of its horns there was a crown, and on each of its heads there was a name that was insulting to God.2 The beast looked like a leopard, with feet like a bear's feet and a mouth like a lion's mouth. The dragon gave the beast his own power, his throne, and his vast authority.3 One of the heads of the beast seemed to have been fatally wounded, but the wound had healed. The whole earth was amazed and followed the beast.4 Everyone worshiped the dragon because he had given his authority to the beast. They worshiped the beast also, saying,
        Who is like the beast? Who can fight against it?
5 The beast was allowed to make proud claims which were insulting to God, and it was permitted to have authority for forty-two months.6It began to curse God, his name, the place where he lives, and all those who live in heaven.7 It was allowed to fight against God's people and to defeat them, and it was given authority over every tribe, nation, language, and race.8 All people living on earth will worship it, except those whose names were written before the creation of the world inthe book of the living which belongs to the Lamb that was killed.

        Listen, then, if you have ears!10 Whoever is meant to be captured will surely be captured; whoever is meant to be killed by the sword will surely be killed by the sword. This calls for endurance and faith on the part of God's people.
  
11 Then I saw another beast, which came up out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb's horns, and it spoke like a dragon.12 It used the vast authority of the first beast in its presence. It forced the earth and all who live on it to worship the first beast, whose wound had healed.13 This second beast performed great miracles; it made fire come down out of heaven to earth in the sight of everyone.14 And it deceived all the people living on earth by means of the miracles which it was allowed to perform in the presence of the first beast. The beast told them to build an image in honor of the beast that had been wounded by the sword and yet lived.15 The second beast was allowed to breathe life into the image of the first beast, so that the image could talk and put to death all those who would not worship it.16 The beast forced all the people, small and great, rich and poor, slave and free, to have a mark placed on their right hands or on their foreheads.17 No one could buy or sell without this mark, that is, the beast's name or the number that stands for the name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Whoever is intelligent can figure out the meaning of the number of the beast, because the number stands for the name of someone. Its number is 666.

THE BEAST (GOVERNMENT) INSULTED GOD 42 MONTHS = 3.5 YEARS, DURING OBAMA’S CRIMINAL OCCUPATION OF THE WHITE HOUSE, IT BEGAN TO CURSE GOD. THE GOVERNMENT WORKS AGAINST GOD’S WILL.

Revelation 13: China and North Korea -- the Red Dragon in the Book of Revelation -- A Bible prophecy and New Age analysis

Here I will show why a series of events called the End Time events, described in the Bible's Book of Revelation are now occurring, and why an evil dictator called the Antichrist will likely rise to power in Russia, and that this Russian dictator will I think enter into an evil alliance against the West with the Red Dragon, China, and also Iran.

We will consider here Biblical prophecy, in particular the new testament Book of Revelation, and the old testament Book of Daniel. The Book of Revelation has prophecies of future world events, in particular the rise to power of an evil dictator called the Beast or the Antichrist, he is in Revelation Chapter 13. I believe the Antichrist will come out of Russia, and may be Russian Prime Minister Putin.

Note that the Antichrist is described in Revelation 13:2 (King James Version):

"And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority."

I believe the Feet of a Bear is referring to Russia, and the Dragon refers to Satan himself, who is the dragon in Biblical terminology, but also I believe the dragon is referring to Red China. This would imply a Russia-China military alliance. This would also imply that Russia will gain a great deal of military power from China's huge armed forces. And the "seat" may be referring to Russia geographically sitting on top of China.

The Old Testament Book of Daniel's prophecies help explain the Book of Revelation's prophecies in Revelation 13. In chapter 7 of the Book of Daniel, Daniel saw a vision of 4 beasts rising out of the sea, representing future empires to come. The first beast was like a lion, and had a man's heart. The second beast was a bear with three ribs in its mouth. The third beast was a leopard with wings and 4 heads. The fourth beast had iron teeth and 10 horns, one of which was a man that spoke great things. These are believed the represent the Babylonian empire (the lion), Medo-Persian empire (the bear), and Greek empire of Alexander (the leopard-- Alexander had the speed of a leopard during military conquest), and the Roman empire (with iron teeth). It is also believed that the final empire may be talking about the Antichrist -- the man who speaks great things. Note that these beasts are combined into the 10-horned beast of Revelation 13, which has the mouth of a lion, feet of a bear, the speed of a leopard, and 10 horns representing a confederation of 10 states. This could be Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, evolving into this angry beast, or the SCO miltary organization consisting of Russia, China, and four Central Asian countries, that Iran could join in the future. This may mean that there will be an increasingly close military alliance between Russia and China, because the beast gets its power from the dragon, which would be Red China. Note that Russia is selling some of its best military weapons to China, including ships, submarines, radar systems, and jet planes, and Russia is also selling nuclear power plants and missles to Iran.

And in Revelation 16, the River Euphrates in Iraq is dried up so that the army of the King of the East (China?) can cross it to the Battle of Armageddon. It is interesting that a severe drought was drying up the River Euphrates in 1999, this was the worst drought in Iraq in his century, and also Turkey is building dams upstream which could dry up this river, so this is another sign that Armageddon is approaching.

Revelation 16:12 "And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water therof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared."

Also referring to the dragon is Revelation 12:3:

"And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon..." 12:9 "And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent...he was cast out into earth, and his angels were cast out with him."

In Revelation 12 the red dragon is referring to Satan, but may also be referring to China, North Korea, and/or Russia. Also see the page on SARS disease, which started in China; I relate SARS to the Red Dragon. SARS would be a demon coming out of the mouth of the dragon China, described in Revelation 16, where the dragon and the two beasts send out demons.

Note that China's first leader, (and most blood-thirsty leader, the present tyrants in charge of Red China are mild compared to Mao), Chairman Mao Zedong, was born on Dec. 26, 1893, the day after Christmas. His being born at Christmas is an indication of Mao being a type of evil Antichrist. Mao's periods of greatest blood-thirstiness and terror were during China's Cultural Revolution from 1966-1976, when Mao encouraged China's youth to put on trial much of China's older adult population, to purge the country of "non-revolutionary" influences, and also when Mao exterminated Tibetan Buddhism by terror and murder, after his Chinese invasion of Tibet. Of the worst tyrants and murderers of the 20th century, only Stalin and Hitler can surpass Mao for evil. Note that Mao's death on Sept. 9, 1976, ended a 31 year period of 17 666 day cycles, as I discuss on the 666 day intervals page. If we consider Mao's birthplace in China, at Shao-shan, Hunan province, China, at geographic coordinates 27.9 N 112.6 E, we will consider the coordinates as related to Bible passage numbers, in particular the Book of Revelation, which is the main topic of this web site. Mao being born at 28 degrees N we will relate to Revelation 12:8 where the angry red dragon is cast down to earth, Revelation 12:7-9:

"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."

Here the Red Dragon represents Satan, but I think a second meaning is that the Red Dragon is China and Russia, and Chairman Mao in particular. Mao's birth was the casting of the red dragon to earth. And the red dragon, Red China, is growing stronger.

Recent events in China and North Korea:

Oct. 10, 2005. A South Korean woman visiting North Korea had her baby on Oct. 10 in North Korea, and was called in North Korea a "Unification baby". This was said to be the first person born in North Korea as a South Korean citizen, and was called in North Korea a "sign" that a North-South unification could be near.

Jan. 1, 2006. North Korea accused the U.S. of wanting to start a new Korean War.

June 17, 2006. A close approach in the sky of Mars and Saturn (within .5 degree). Note that there was talk then of North Korea preparing for a long range missile test, where the missile could reach the U.S.. This would be the Taepodong-2 missile, its longest range missle that could reach California. In August 1998 a test firing of this missile went over Japan.

Oct. 9, 2006. The first North Korea atomic bomb test.

Remember, Ben Nelson provided the final and deciding vote Democrats needed to pass Obamacare.

In exchange for his vote, Nelson took $45 million in taxpayer-funded Medicare subsidies – the "Cornhusker Kickback" – embarrassing every hard working man and woman in Nebraska.

Americans simply can't afford for Ben Nelson to be re-elected.

That's why I'm reaching out to you today. In order to take back this seat next year, we need the early support of conservatives around the country.

As the state Attorney General since 2003, I made sure Nebraska was one of the first states to join the lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of President Obama's – and Ben Nelson's – health care law.

I firmly believe Obamacare tramples on individual liberty, is unconstitutional, and unfairly burdens states with a massive new entitlement program.

• participated in racially-tinged arguments on Facebook, teaming up with Ralph Long, lobbying solely for what only their choice black constituents want, those who pay to keep them up/not what the majority of Georgia taxpayers have asked and required of them
• honestly one of the most racist mixed people I've ever met! I say this as being a mix of Native American and 3 European lineages myself: he's Obama's right-hand stooge in the South.

3. RALPH LONG - (D-61) GEORGIA

• poorly represents my district's values of Constitutionally-limited government and fiscal responsibility
• while he doesn't idolize Obama, he will call you 'unpatriotic' if your opinion disagrees with his opinion or Obama's
• participated in racially-tinged arguments on Facebook, teaming up with Rahn Mayo, lobbying solely for what only their choice black constituents want, those who pay to keep them up/not what the majority of Georgia taxpayers have asked and required of them
• while I believe Ralph Long's intentions is to aspire to be like MLK JR, or Mandella, and he handles debate better than the giggling and Ebonics-speaking Mayo, Long is being judged by the company that he keeps: Rahn Mayo is his cohort, along with several other black legislators, as in: "if you aren't black, they're on the attack, from their blackberries that is..."

4. ALISHA MORGAN - (D-39) GEORGIA

• doesn't embody the kind of communication skills that we as taxpayers demand and expect from those who ride on our tax dollars... she asked to be removed from SYNTHESIS discussion, so it is quite clear that she doesn't want to hear what the majority has to say
• she doesn't seem pro-Obama, but more akin to black church mafia
• while I don't believe that she intends to come across this way, she aligns herself with the same legislators who accommodate black bias, lobbying solely for what only their choice black constituents want, those who pay to keep them up/not what the majority of Georgia taxpayers have asked and required of them

5. HUGH FLOYD - (D-99) GEORGIA

• poorly represents my district's values of Constitutionally-limited government and fiscal responsibility
• this guy acts like he's a rock star: he'll reject your email, ignore your documents, and tell you that you're not 'his' constituent, though you're paying for him to ignore your pleas
• to boot: this guy is a Methodist, not just lackluster for Jesus, but wants everyone to know that his methodology and contrived way of neglecting you in his district goes further than just ego/it's a religious prerogative for him.

White there were no indications of illegality or ethics violations in terms of the flights and McCaskill has said she'd repay more than $88,000 to the U.S. Treasury, a realization of how toxic the story is in the current political climate.

But on Monday the story got even more poisonous for her political future. Politico reported that she and her husband failed to pay $287,273 in personal property taxes on the airplane.

Congressional Reform Act of 2011.

THIS IS HOW TO FIX CONGRESS!!!!!

1. Term Limits.

12 years only, one of the possible options below..

A. Two Six-year Senate terms

B. Six Two-year House terms

C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms

2. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman will collect a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people.

4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.

Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

7. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

8. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/11.

The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

The 70-Million-Check Constituency

Obama and the left have a massive constituency of tens of millions who do not comprehend the true meaning of money, only caring that the government check is in the mail.

In an interview with CBS anchor Scott Pelley last week, President Obama was asked if he could guarantee that Social Security checks would go out in August if House Republicans refused to raise the national debt ceiling.

Obama replied, "Well, this is not just a matter of Social Security checks.  These are veterans' checks; these are folks on disability and their checks.  There are about 70 million checks that go out... I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd, if we haven't resolved this issue."

Seventy million government checks!  In a population of 309 million, almost 23% of the population is receiving some kind of check from the federal government.

I have bad news for conservatives who think Obama is leading the nation down the path to socialism: the barn door is open and the cows are long gone.  Obama is not leading the nation to socialism; we are a socialist nation and have been for some time.  Conservatives who think Obama is a Marxist and an anti-capitalist radical are surely correct, but what is also surely correct is that he represents an actual constituency of tens of millions who care about nothing other than the fact that the government check is in the mail.  This is a serious problem for conservative Republicans and Tea Partiers seeking to cut the federal budget and restore fiscal sanity.

One Obama Presser, 36 Obama Lies and Deceptions

Obama held a press conference last Friday, July 15 which turned out to be a purely partisan effort to increase taxes and increase the American debt. His speech and the answers he gave to cherry picked questions from the press was fundamentally dishonest: in all I counted three dozen lies, deceptions and misleading statements.　

Deception 1. "make sure that the United States does not default on our obligations, and that the full faith and credit of the United States is preserved."

There is zero risk of a default to the creditors of US debt. The federal government takes in about $170 billion each month in revenues, but pays less than $29 billion each month in interest on the debt. The Bipartisan Policy Center has laid out a plan where the Treasury could pay: all debt interest, all Social Security obligations, all Medicare and Medicaid obligations, all Defense contractor bills, all Veterans payments, all active duty troops; and still have almost $7 billion left over every month for other items.

Obama is using pure political scare tactics to deceive uneducated voters into supporting his position. There is no risk to "the full faith and credit of the United States" unless Treasury chooses to default. Not raising the debt limit will cause a limited government shutdown, not a default, as Obama insinuates.　

Deception 2. "I think we should not even be this close to a deadline on this issue; this should have been taken care of earlier."

The Obama administration created the present crisis with the introduction of his 2012 budget on Feb. 14, 2011. Obama's budget had a $1.1 Trillion deficit and was defeated by a vote of 97 to 0 in the United States Senate. Obama's own failure to submit a budget which could gain even a single vote directly caused the entire crisis.

Deception 3. "These are obligations that the United States has taken on in the past. Congress has run up the credit card, and we now have an obligation to pay our bills."

There is plenty of government revenue to cover the obligations the US government has taken on in the past. The entire issue is the obligations the US government will take on in the future. Republicans in Congress want to reduce those obligations -- they want to stop running up the credit card -- and Obama is saying "No, continue to spend."

Deception 4. "We could end up with a situation, for example, where interest rates rise for everybody all throughout the country, effectively a tax increase on everybody."

Obama is painting a fundamentally dishonest scenario. His strategy to continue debt spending will saddle future generations of Americans with more and more debt which will eventually result in higher taxes in the future. He is advocating increased borrowing which in reality is "a tax increase on everybody."

People globally invest in US debt because the United States of America is by far the strongest most vibrant and innovative economy on earth. The world economy is suffering and the result is demand for US debt, not a reluctance to lend. As long as Treasury chooses not to default on the US debt there will be little or no rise in interest rate. If anything, refusing to raise the limit debt would demonstrate to the world that we as a nation are finally serious about managing government spending and from a long term macroeconomic perspective the USA will be a much stronger nation.

Deception 5. "businesses that are trying to make payroll, all of them could end up being impacted as a consequence of a default."

Obama is arguing that a default will cause increased interest rates, which will have "adverse consequences." Putting aside the fact that failing to increase the debt limit will not result in a default unless Obama chooses to default, even a default and the increased interest rates will have little if any effect on most "businesses that are trying to make payroll." Unlike the US government, the vast majority of businesses do not borrow money to pay their employees. Even if interest rates did rise, payroll payments for most businesses would stay the same.

Lie 6. "We have a chance to stabilize America's finances for a decade, for 15 years, or 20 years, if we're willing to seize the moment."

At present the national debt amounts to US$14.12 Trillion: 100% of the US GDP. Deficit spending in 2011 will exceed $1.48 Trillion; over ten years spending at that rate would amount to $14.8 Trillion, doubling the US debt.

Obama's budget proposal would reduce deficit spending to $1.1 Trillion per year through a combination of spending cuts and tax increases. Fourteen years at this rate would still double our national debt with $15.4 Trillion of new deficit spending.

Either scenario will put the USA in the same scenario Greece is in today. Obama is lying when he insinuates he has made an effort to stabilize America's financial future.

Lie 7. "let's still try to at least get a down payment on deficit reduction."

The notion of getting "a down payment on deficit reduction" is a lie. What is a "down payment"? It is an initial payment which by definition must be followed by more payments. If Obama wants to get a "down payment on deficit reduction" then he must plan for follow on payments. Normally, when you make a down payment, if you are unable to make the follow on payments you lose your down payment! Obama's attempt to change a single reduction into a "down payment" is a lie. Language only a lawyer could twist.

Deception 8. (continued from Lie 7) "And that we can actually accomplish without huge changes in revenue or significant changes in entitlements,"

Except that according to his own deficit commission (Bowles-Simpson) significant changes in both revenue and entitlements are required in order to reduce the deficit. Obama's insinuation that continued deficit reduction because a down payment implies future payments) can happen without "significant changes in entitlements" is another deception: his own experts are telling him otherwise.

Deception 9. (continued from Deception 8) "but we could still send a signal that we are serious about this problem."

The "down payment" Obama talks about in Lie 7 is a $2 Trillion reduction in deficit spending over ten years. He is proposal will still double the national debt in less than 15 years putting us where Greece is today. In no way could this single reduction demonstrate that the US government is serious about this problem.

Deception 10. "And I think it's important for everybody to understand that all of us believe that we need to get to a point where eventually we can balance the budget."　

Nobody who has the audacity to submit a budget with $1.1 Trillion in deficit spending can be trusted when they say they "eventually" want to balance the budget.

Deception 11. "We don't need a constitutional amendment to do that; what we need to do is to do our jobs."

Obama submitted the 2012 budget on Feb. 14, 2011 with a $1.1 Trillion deficit, $3.73 Trillion in spending and revenues of $2.63 Trillion. George W Bush's 2008 budget had a $240 Billion deficit on $2.8 Trillion in spending. Spending increases account for 75% of the increase in Obama's 2012 deficit. Clearly Obama finds it impossible to do his job.

Deception 12. "And we have to do it the same way a family would do it. A family, if they get over-extended and their credit card is too high, they don't just stop paying their bills. What they do is they say, how do we start cutting our monthly costs? We keep on making payments, but we start cutting out the things that aren't necessary."　

Actually, Mr. President, those drastic measures you just outlined are exactly what families do. They keep making payments, but they don't "start cutting our monthly costs", they don't "start cutting out the things that are necessary", they immediately curtail spending so they won't have to continue borrowing money because they have used up their entire credit limit. What world do you live in?

Deception 13. (continued from Deception 12) "And we do it in a way that maintains our credit rating. We do it in a way that's responsible" Another Obama deception. He is implying that Republicans want to damage the USA credit rating. As we demonstrated in Deception 1, there is no danger to the USA credit rating if Congress refuses to increase the debt limit: the Treasury will be forced to make tough choices to pay what he is able and a limited government shutdown will ensue.

Deception 14. "I think that American consumers and American businesses would benefit from a continuation of that tax cut next year." Obama is advocating the increase of taxes for "the rich" and in the same speech advocating extending subsidies to the unemployed. What happened to a "balanced approach"? How does he plan to pay for these subsidies if not with deficit spending? This statement reveals Obama's hypocritical ethos. He knows that tax cuts for the rich create jobs for the middle class. He knows that extended welfare subsidies foster sloth. But Obama is not about doing what is best for America, Obama is all about taking from the rich and giving to the poor and using federal dollars to bribe his constituents to make sure he is elected again in 2012.

Lie 15. "... we can, as I said before, fix this thing probably for a decade or more"

Obama restates Lie 6. in a different light, implying that Congress will not have to increase the debt limit again "for a decade or more." People who didn't listen carefully will think 'Obama's plan will solve this debt limit problem for ten years!'. In reality the present proposed $2.4 Trillion debt limit increase will only last until 2013, conveniently after the 2012 election. Its all politics.

Lie 16. "I think this notion that things got ugly is just not true."

When the President of the United States verbally threatens a member of Congress saying "Eric, don't call my bluff. I'm going to the American people on this," and then schedule a press conference specifically "to take it to the American people", that is ugly, by definition.

Deception 17. "Bowles-Simpson ... was originally bipartisan legislation that some of the Republican supporters of decided to vote against when I said I supported it"

Notwithstanding what Obama may or may not have said, in reality Obama never supported the Bowles-Simpson budget, in whole or in part. Obama's 2012 Budget with a $1.1 Trillion deficit included none of the spending reductions from Bowles-Simpson commission. Here Obama is trying to deceive the American public into believing he supported Bowles-Simpson when his actions tell otherwise.

Lie 18. "a lot of the components of Bowles-Simpson we are willing to embrace -- for example, the domestic spending cuts that they recommend we've basically taken."

Obama's 2012 Budget proposal with a $1.1 Trillion deficit is evidence of this lie.

Lie 19. "... you have 80 percent of the American people who support a balanced approach. Eighty percent of the American people support an approach that includes revenues and includes cuts."

From a July 7-10 Gallup poll. 69% of the people support spending cuts together with new taxes:

Only/Mostly with spending cuts: 20%

Mostly with spending cuts: 30%

Equal with spending cuts and taxes: 32%

Mostly with tax increases: 7%

Only with tax increases: 4%

Undecided: 7%

The more subtle part of this deception is what Obama fails to mention regarding the same Gallup poll. The American public by a margin of nearly 2:1 do not want to increase the debt limit. Perhaps this is because most Americans don't believe Congress will lower the deficit enough to make a difference.

Deception 20. "It turns out that our problem is we cut taxes without paying for them over the last decade"

Obama implies that the deficits we have now have been going on for the last ten years, insinuating it is an ongoing problem from the Bush administration. The reality is that deficit spending in Obama's first three years in office is more than double the entire deficit spending of the George W Bush administration. Deficits for the last ten years:

2011 $1,500 Billion

2010 $1,300 Billion

2009 $1,400 Billion

2008 $240 Billion

2007 $161 Billion

2006 $248 Billion

2005 $319 Billion

2004 $412 Billion

2003 $374 Billion

2002 $159 Billion

US budget deficits ballooned when Obama took office. Increased spending accounts for 3/4 of the new deficit spending; reduced tax revenue accounts for 1/4. More fundamentally instead of restoring investor confidence Obama's deficit spending, a key component in Obama's failed economic policy, has resulted in a double dip recession and stagnant growth with no end in sight.

Deception 21. "what's required is that we roll back those tax cuts ... clean up our tax code ... cut programs that we don't need, and we invest in those things that are going to help us grow. And every commission that's been out there has said the same thing and basically taken the same approach, within the margin of error."

Bowles-Simpson, a commission which Obama organized outlined far more reaching cuts in entitlements (above and beyond cutting "programs that we don't need") which Obama ignores, again deceiving the American public.

Lie 22. "And they don't require "job-killing tax cuts.""

Study upon study have shown that in the short term tax cuts increase jobs for the middle class.

Deception 23. "They require us to make some modest adjustments to get our house in order, and we should do it now."

The bipartisan Bowles-Simpson commission organized by Obama suggested much more drastic measures are required to resolve the present government budget woes. Not "some modest". Obama ignores his own research and deceives America.

Deception 24. "let's at least avert Armageddon."

Another typical liberal Obama lie / scare tactic. As explained in Deception 1 there is zero risk of Armageddon or default in debt payments by the US government unless Obama chooses to default. There will be a government shutdown, but a default will only occur if Obama intentionally decides to default.

Deception 25. "I'd like to solve that second problem."

Maybe he would like to quit smoking as well but he won't. Obama was given the opportunity to solve the second problem when he submitted his budget to Congress. He ignored almost all of the recommendations from his own deficit commission. Even with increased tax revenues the deficit in his budget remained at $1.1 Trillion.

Deception 26. "... a balanced approach that includes some revenue is the right thing to do. The majority of Republican voters say that approach is the right thing to do."

Obama ignores the polling data he is citing. Only 11% of Republicans support a debt increase; 60% are against. Obama is deceiving the public when he implies that Republicans support his "balanced approach" to increase the debt limit. In fact Americans as a whole are against increasing the debt limit by nearly a 2 to 1 margin.

There is support for a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, but twice before during the Regan and Bush Sr. administrations Democrats offered conservatives the same deal except that the spending cuts never came. Obama says he is willing to accept $3 Trillion in cuts for $1 Trillion in taxes, but is he willing to accept $8.25 Trillion in cuts for $2.75 Trillion in new taxes? This is where Congress should call Obama's bluff.

Deception 27. "The question is going to be whether at any given moment we're willing to set politics aside, at least briefly, in order to get something done."

Obama misleadingly implies that he is above the fray while the other side is playing politics. In reality both sides are playing politics. In fact his entire press conference is just another example of his playing politics by "going to the American people on this." Except that it is not 2008 any longer. People already realize that when it comes to playing politics Obama is just as guilty as the next politician.

Deception 28. "I've got an infrastructure bank bill that would start putting construction workers back to work rebuilding our roads and bridges."

This statement belies Obama's ability to compromise. Just how does he expect to pay for these infrastructure bills if not with more deficit spending? This statement summarizes the distrust conservatives have for everything Obama says and does.

Deception 29. "I've got three trade deals ... being held up because some folks don't want to provide trade adjustment assistance to people ... displaced as a consequence of trade."

Again, how does Obama plan to pay for this trade adjustment assistance if not with deficit spending? Another example of Obama's bad faith in the ongoing negotiations. In this press conference he admitted that as soon as the debt limit is increased he will find at least three new ways to increase spending. This is why Republicans are reluctant to increase tax revenue: because they know the more they feed the beast the more Obama will think of new ways to spend money.

Lie 30. "I'm going to keep on trying"

This implies that Obama started trying. Deception 2 established clearly that Obama has not been trying. If anything he has been trying to cause this crisis to win political points with his constituents.

Deception 31. "American people are going to say ... if a party or a politician is constantly taking the position 'my way or the highway,' constantly being locked into ideologically rigid positions, that we're going to remember at the polls."

Classic Obama obfuscation. Is he genuinely trying to tell the voting public to throw him out in 2012? Obama began saying my way or the highway on January 24, 2009 when he reminded the Republicans after four days in office: "I won." Last week he stormed out of a meeting with Rep. Eric Cantor in the middle of negotiations when he didn't get his way. His entire press conference was his attempt to go "to the American people on this."

Deception 32. "... what the American people are paying attention to is who seems to be trying to get something done, and who seems to be just posturing and trying to score political points. And I think it's going to be in the interests of everybody who wants to continue to serve in this town to make sure that they are on the right side of that impression."

Obama is again using deception by raising an issue to imply that he above "just posturing and trying to score political points." Except the entire press conference is nothing more than political posturing by Obama! He is doing exactly what he is criticizing others of doing! A case of projection. Obama has no plan and has not submitted any revised budget since February 14. To Obama it is not important whether he is on the right side as long as he is "on the right side of that impression."

Deception 33. "I said the American people do not want to see a bunch of posturing; they don't want to hear a bunch of sound bites. What they want is for us to solve problems, and we all have to remember that. That's why we were sent here."

This statement by itself is nothing more than a sound bite. Until July Obama did almost nothing personally to try and resolve the debt limit problem. Republicans have said over and over again: "He has no plan!" But he has a silver tongue and the skill to effortlessly shift blame on to others.

Deception 34. "... we know how we can create a package that solves the deficits and debt for a significant period of time."

In Lie 6 and Lie 15 Obama previously talked about stabilizing finances for "a decade, for 15 years, or 20 years." Now Obama mentions "a significant period of time." Nothing Obama has discussed with any Republican went offered a resolution which would raise the debt limit and lower spending beyond 2014. His definition of "a significant period of time" in context with language implying a solution lasting over a decade is patently dishonest.

Lie 35. "... if you are a progressive, you should be concerned about debt and deficit ... because if the only thing we're talking about over the next year, two years, five years, is debt and deficits, then it's very hard to start talking about how do we make investments in community colleges ... how do we actually rebuild $2 trillion worth of crumbling infrastructure."

This statement exemplifies the chasm between Obama and conservatives. The Tea Party does not want to increase the debt limit because they do not trust the government to control spending. Deception 14, Deception 28 and Deception 29 all mentioned new spending initiatives Obama has with plans ready to launch. And yet he has no revised budget plan? Everything he has said about cutting the deficit and controlling spending is a lie.

Deception 36. "It would be very helpful for us to be able to say to the American people, our fiscal house is in order. And so now the question is what should we be doing to win the future and make ourselves more competitive and create more jobs, and what aspects of what government is doing are a waste and we should eliminate."

Which is a great sound bite and a wonderful note to end the bully pulpit press conference on except that Obama just finished saying he has plans to spend over a trillion dollars to finance Deception 14, Deception 28 and Deception 29. Moreover Obama made plans for more deficit spending while the fiscal house was not in order. Obama has no plan specifically outlining how to put the fiscal house in order. Pure (misleading smoke and mirror) politics.

These deceptions, lies and misleading statements define why Obama cannot be trusted to tell the truth. They also define why Congress must vote against raising the debt limit.

Senate rejects 'Cut, Cap, Balance'

The Democratic-controlled Senate on Friday narrowly voted to block a Republican measure that would force Congress to pass a stringent balanced budget amendment and cap spending before increasing the debt ceiling.

The legislation, a conservative priority, never had a chance of passing, but the strictly partisan 51-46 vote to table the “Cut, Cap and Balance” bill highlighted the partisan divide in Washington over how to tackle spending and raise the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt limit. Before the vote Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) again called the plan “radical” and “one of the worst pieces of legislation to ever be placed on the floor of the United States Senate.”

The vote handed conservatives a chance to showcase their strategy for restricting future spending in Washington, but it faced a veto from President Barack Obama, so it was more of a symbolic vote for Republicans to put their mark on deficit reduction.

Santorum: Same-Sex Marriage Helped Destroy The Economy

Yesterday, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum appeared on Today’s Issues on American Family Radio, along with the Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins and the American Family Association’s Tim Wildmon, to discuss the Ames Straw Poll. After celebrating his fourth place finish in the straw poll, Santorum told Perkins and Wildmon that marriage equality, or what he calls the “redefinition of marriage,” secular government and legal abortion are responsible for the country’s economic collapse and created “a society that’s broken”:

Santorum: Letting the family break down and in fact encouraging it and inciting more breakdown through this whole redefinition of marriage debate, and not supporting strong nuclear families and not supporting and standing up for the dignity of human life. Those lead to a society that’s broken.

…

If you think that we can be a society that kills our own, and that disregards the family and the important role it plays, and doesn’t teach moral values and the important role of faith in the public square, and then expect people to be good, decent and moral when they behave economically, if you look at the root cause of the economic problems that we’re dealing with on Wall Street and Main Street I might add, from 2008, they were huge moral failings. And you can’t say that we’re gonna take morality out of the public square, morality out of our schools, God out of our schools, and then expect people to behave decently in a country that requires, capitalism requires some strong modicum of moral consciousness if it’s gonna be successful.

UPDATE:

The Australian is reporting that Onyango Obama has retained Cleveland lawyer Margaret Wong. This is the same immigration attorney who successfully represented Mr. Obama's sister Zeituni, when she managed to avoid deportation to Kenya. Mr. Obama pleaded not guilty at his remand hearing.

*Clarification: Onyango Obama nearly hit the police car. He did not actually hit it, according to police reports.

A number of media outlets have already reported that an illegal immigrant from Kenya by the name of Onyango Obama, 67, was arrested last week on Wednesday after he nearly rammed his SUV into a police car in Framingham, Massachusetts.

He was later charged with DUI among other violations. I spoke to Framingham Public Information Officer Lieutenant Delaney who told me that when Onyango Obama was asked at booking if he wanted to make a telephone call to arrange for bail, the Kenyan immigrant replied: "I think I will call the White House."

It should be noted that the Times of London, highlighted an Onyango Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign, when the British daily found President Barack Obama's “Aunt Zeituni” living in Boston illegally.:

Dreams From My Father was first published in 1995, and the story of how Mr Obama returned to Kenya in 1988 to trace his roots has become the cornerstone of his political biography. Yet the US media appears to have overlooked the passage indicating that at least one relative of Mr Obama’s had moved to America and might still be there.

Two thirds of the way through the book Mr Obama’s half-sister talked about Africans who had emigrated to the West and were never heard of again, “like our Uncle Omar, in Boston . . . They’ve been lost, you see”.

A few pages later Mr Obama meets his step-grandmother, Sarah, for the first time in the village of Kogelo. On the walls of her hut are photographs of Omar, “the uncle who had left for America 25 years ago and never came back”. Touchingly, she asks the future presidential candidate if he has any news of Omar, her son and Mr Obama’s half-uncle.

This triggered a six-week search, one that would lead eventually to Boston and to Aunt Zeituni. Public record searches found traces of O. Onyango Obama, Uncle Omar’s real name, in Boston. A friend and a former landlady said that he now uses the name Obama Onyango.

In the course of searching for Uncle Omar The Times found a Zeituni Onyango, who also played a prominent part in Mr Obama’s book.

In the memoir Auntie Zeituni, Uncle Omar’s sister, explained the family’s complex family tree to the future presidential candidate, introduced him to other relatives and fed him a herbal remedy for an upset stomach.

Also, a wikipedia page about the president's family that has not been edited since August 2 mentions Uncle Omar:

Omar ObamaHalf-uncle of Barack Obama,[126] born on June 3, 1944 in Nyang’oma Kogelo. Oldest son of Onyango and Sarah Obama, resides in Boston, Massachusetts.

The daily log from the Framingham Police Department shows the Onyango Obama that was arrested last week in Framingham, a Boston suburb, has the birth date of June 3, 1944.

Metrowest Daily first reported Onyango Obama's arrest:

After the near crash, Onyango Obama, 67, told Officer Val Krishtal that Krishtal should have yielded to his Mitsubishi SUV, according to a report filed yesterday in Framingham District Court.

Krishtal said he and another driver had to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting the SUV, which rolled through a stop sign and took a quick left turn.

Obama said he doubted the officer slammed on his brakes because he did not hear the tires squeal, the report says.

Krishtal said he was on Waverly Street headed toward South Street when his police car was cut off. Krishtal pulled the SUV over around 7:10 p.m.

Obama failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested. At the police station, Obama failed a Breathalyzer test, registering .14. The state legal limit is .08.

Obama was charged with driving under the influence of liquor and driving to endanger. He was also cited for not using a turn signal.

According to article, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement has warrant for his arrest and ICE previously ordered him to be deported back to Kenya. In the meantime, a judge has not set bail on the driving charges but ordered that he be held on the ICE warrant.

Stocks: Hurricane Irene, jobs and Europe dominate By Maureen Farrell August 28, 2011: 2:38 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- With no disruption in trading expected from Hurricane Irene, investors will quickly turn their attention to the state of the labor market, with the key government report due out Friday.
Lingering concerns about the after-effects of Hurricane Irene may keep trading volume light on Monday. There are 4 million people without power and in New York City, commuting will be made more difficult by flooded roadways and rail systems.
But the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and CME (Nymex) all say they plan to open for "business as usual." Insurance stocks could grab some early attention as firms, such as Chubb Corp (CB, Fortune 500)., Allstate Corp. (ALL,Fortune 500) and MetLife (MET,Fortune 500) work to assess Irene's damage.
Beyond the storm's aftermath, investors will be focused on Europe's ongoing debt problems, while bracing for the all important jobs report.
Any worsening of the nation's job woes could be yet another signal of an impending recession, yet investors retain some hope that such signals may still induce Fed chairman Ben Bernanke to take some action.
During his Jackson Hole speech Friday, Bernanke didn't give any hints about another round of economic stimulus, but he did say the central bank would do all it could to help boost the recovery. At the same time, he cautioned that the Fed's powers were limited.
"The story is not yet finished about the impact of Bernanke's speech," said Komal Sri-Kumar, chief global strategist at the investment firm TCW.
Sri-Kumar said the market eventually rallied after Bernanke's speech because investors are holding onto hopes that the Fed will announce more stimulus in the next 45 days. The central bank will hold a two-day policy meeting next month.
"Bernanke really indicated that the central bank has a lot more tools and weapons at its disposal to stimulate the economy," said Jesse Cole, the head of Merlin Institutional Group, Merlin Securities' institutional sales group.
The Dow and the S&P gained more than 4% last week, and the Nasdaq climbed 5.7%.
Europe will also remain a central focus for investors, especially as Greece's finance minister has taken a hard line with European banks over the country's rescue plan.
Evangelos Venizelos has indicated that Greece might only accept a redoing of its original rescue package if 90% of banks who have extended $195 billion in loans are willing to participate in a swap. The swap would change the repayment terms to 30 from 3.
"Once again the European debt crisis could quickly take on a new form," says Sri-Kumar. "It could quickly deteriorate."

Hurricane Irene may cause gas price spike

With so much uncertainty on the agenda, investors can at least make a plea to Mother Nature to help ensure that Deutsche Bank's executives get to ring the opening bell Monday morning.
On the docket
Monday: Investors will get the July numbers on personal income and spending ahead of the market open. Economists expect both figures to rise 0.4% and 0.5% respectively, according to Briefing.com.
Pending home sales figures for June are slated to come in after the open and are expected to fall 1.4%, despite rising 1.4% the prior month.
Tuesday: The Case-Shiller 20-city Index will release its June numbers ahead of the opening bell. The index is expected to fall 4.7% for June after dropping 4.51% the previous month.
Retailers Barnes & Noble (BKS, Fortune 500) and Dollar General (DG, Fortune 500) will report quarterly results before the opening bell.

America's most dangerous jobs

Wednesday: Investors will get the ADP private employment report at 8:15 a.m. ET. Economists expect the private sector hired 100,000 fresh workers in August, down from the 114,000 the sector hired in the prior month.
In other economic data, the Commerce Department will release June factory orders data and the Institute for Supply Management's will put out its service sector index at 10 a.m. ET.
Economists are looking for factory orders to fall 1% and the ISM's service sector index to fall to a reading of 53.1. T
Thursday: The Labor Department's closely-watched weekly initial jobless claims data comes out at 8:30 a.m. ET, with economists expecting claims to drop slightly to a reading of 408,000 claims from last week's 417,000 claims.

Economy: 'Slowdown is here to stay'

Wall Street will get the Institute for Supply Management's August manufacturing index, as well as construction spending figures from the Commerce Department.
Economists expect the August ISM index will fall to a reading of 47 from last month's 48.5, while construction spending figures are expected to increase 0.1%, down slightly from last month's 0.2% increase.
Friday: The week culminates with the Labor Department's August jobs report, which will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists expect unemployment to stay steady at 9.1%. Payrolls are forecast to grow by 75,000 jobs in August below last month's 117,000.
Analyst will also keep an eye out for Campbell Soup (CPB, Fortune 500), which reports quarterly results before the open.

In his new book about states' rights, GOP Gov. Rick Perry celebrates the spirit of tea party activists and others who, in the name of the Constitution, he says, are mounting a revolution to save America from grave and imminent danger.

He blames what he sees as the invasive and corrosive nature of the federal government on everyone from President Barack Obama to Republicans who "capitulate" through compromise, including George W. Bush.

The "winds of change" that are blowing through the country are not just directed at Democrats, Perry argues, but also at Republicans who have not resisted efforts to expand federal power.

The book, "Fed Up! Our Fight to Save America from Washington," is an unabashed call to action by the Texas governor, who was decisively re-elected Tuesday.

"The American people have never sat idle when liberty's trumpet sounds the call to battle — and today that battle is for the soul of America," Perry writes.

The book's release date is Nov. 15, but it was on sale Tuesday at Perry's election night victory party, and by Wednesday it will be available online and in at least one Austin book store.

Perry kicks off his national book tour in New York today on the "Today" show and "Fox & Friends," followed by several other national television and radio appearances, according to a campaign spokeswoman.

On Monday, Perry will discuss his book on Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show," said the spokeswoman, Catherine Frazier.

Next week, he'll attend Texas book events, including one in the Austin area, scheduled for Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Dell Diamond. And Perry plans to have book events in San Diego when he's there later this month for the Republican Governors Association convention, Frazier said.

Perry is quick to pre-empt criticism that he's using the book tour to test the waters for a White House bid.

"Cynics will say that I decided to write this book because I seek higher office," Perry writes. "They are wrong: I already have the best job in America."

He does, however, echo the tone of a favorite Republican president — Ronald Reagan — to argue that the country's best days could be ahead of it. But only if the states stand up to the "tyranny of an expansive and meddlesome federal government."

And Perry addresses those "who want to paint me as a backwards southern governor" by assuming that his support of states' rights implies that he doesn't think the Civil Rights Act should have been passed. "Wrong," he writes.

Perry tempers his criticism of Bush by saying his predecessor as Texas governor is a great American patriot and leader.

But he excoriates "compassionate conservatism," the signature of Bush's presidential campaign in 2000. It sent the wrong signal that unqualified conservatism was "somehow flawed and had to be rebranded," he writes.

He also chides Bush for presiding over an expansion of federal authority with unprecedented education mandates and the creation of a prescription drug benefit for elderly people.

Much of the book echoes some of Perry's central campaign themes: border security, the ineptitude of the federal government and the superiority of the Texas economic model.

"Washington could learn a thing or two from Texas," Perry writes, such as adopting a two-year budget process and setting constitutional spending limits on the federal budget.

Perry glosses over much of Texas' impending budget trouble, not mentioning that legislators could face a budget shortfall of more than $24 billion when they return to Austin in January.

As for fixing the federal government, Perry's No. 1 answer is to repeal health care reform legislation, which he says "represents the closest this country has ever come to outright socialism."

Health care should be paid for by the individual — through work, savings, charity and private insurance — not the federal government, he argues.

"The future of America depends on reversing this law," Perry writes.

He also recommends a series of amendments to the U.S. Constitution, including eliminating the income tax; setting limits on the lifetime appointment of federal judges, including Supreme Court justices, who "rule over us with no accountability;" and clarifying certain amendments that he says the courts have distorted.

States play a key role in the resistance and should stop accepting some federal money that is used to "bribe and coerce us" into doing the federal government's bidding, Perry writes.

"Our fight is to save America from Washington," Perry concludes. "We just need a few good patriots who are fed up with the status quo, armed with the Constitution, and fueled with courage."

In the acknowledgments section of the book, Perry thanks people who assisted him in writing, researching and editing the book, including Chip Roy, a former adviser to U.S. Sen. John Cornyn who "resigned his position as Special Assistant United States Attorney to devote himself full-time to the completion of the original manuscript." Frazier said Perry wrote the book, which has a forward by former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and was published by Little, Brown and Co.

This is Perry's second book. His first, "On My Honor, Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts are Worth Fighting For," was released in 2008.

Proceeds from the new book go to the Center for Tenth Amendment Studies at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative think tank in Austin.

Texans "elect folks like me. You know the type, the kind of guy who goes jogging in the morning, packing a Ruger .380 with laser sights and loaded with hollow-point bullets, and shoots a coyote that is threatening his daughter's dog."

"I do think George (W. Bush) is basically a conservative man who believes in God, in the greatness of America, in the protection of life, and in protecting our nation from our enemies ... (but) he turned a blind eye to undisciplined domestic spending while he focused on ensuring funding for a very important war against the perpetrators of terror."

"America is great. Yet for some in our nation, to make such a statement is considered arrogant, close-minded, or jingoistic — the kind of thing said by cowboys, as if it is a bad thing to be a cowboy."

"Aren't you wondering about the Social Security Trust Fund you've heard so much about? Well, it must be somewhere in Al Gore's lockbox, right next to his notes from inventing the Internet and that global cooling data he doesn't want anyone to see."

"If Republicans don't get it right this time, I am afraid we will go the way of the Whigs, because the American people are looking for leaders who will stand athwart history, and fight."

Rick Perry, the Republicans’ Messiah?

Rick Perry’s rapid lead over previous Republican front-runner Mitt Romney was predictable. But it is not a good sign for Republicans hoping to reclaim the White House and further highlights the crucial battle within GOP circles: Who is the godliest of us all?
That’s the mirror-mirror question for Republicans. Forget charisma, charm, intelligence, knowledge and that nuisance, “foreign policy experience.” The race of the moment concerns which candidate is the truest believer.

Rick Perry's meltdown on global warming

This was always a tough hurdle for Romney, whose Mormonism is reflexively distrusted by Southern evangelicals. Even so, in the absence of a better candidate, Romney had a fighting chance to win his party’s support. Then came Perry.
Talk about a perfect-storm, composite candidate. Combine Elmer Gantry’s nose for converts, Ronald Reagan’s folksy confidence and Sarah Palin’s disdain for the elites — and that dog hunts.
Perry doesn’t just believe, he evangelizes. He summons prayer meetings. He reads scripture while callers are on hold. Not incidentally, he’s a successful governor. Perhaps most important, he’s a wall-scaling fundraiser whose instincts make him a force of nature in the political landscape.
If you’re Romney, Perry is a nightmare that’s still there in the morning. If you’re Barack Obama, maybe not so much?
Perry’s political instincts were in evidence when he timed his entrance into the race just as everybody else was trying to grab straws in the Iowa poll. If life is high school in adult relief, Perry is the guy who shows up in a truck with a winch and pulls the car out of the ditch while those other guys are looking for a jack.
Whether you like his politics or not, he emits a pheromonal can-do-ness. Apparently, plenty of Republicans do like his politics, which has much to do with the very devil-may-care attitude that eventually will become Perry’s cross to bear. Gallup’s recent polling shows him not just passing Romney, but dusting him. Among Republican voters, 29 percent now swear their allegiance to the Texas governor, almost double the 17 percent for Romney.
Huddled around the exhaust pipe are, you got it, the jack handlers: Ron Paul (13 percent) and Michele Bachmann (10 percent), followed by Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Jon Huntsman in the single digits.
Perry’s campaign strategy is to talk only about jobs-jobs-jobs, no matter what the question. That’s both smart and necessary, but jobs-jobs-jobs isn’t the money trinity with his base. Perry already hit that station with his prayer rally and various dog whistles to the congregation: He’s not sure anyone knows how old Earth is, evolution is just a “theory” and global warming isn’t man-made.
That we are yet again debating evolutionary theory and Earth’s origins — and that candidates now have to declare where they stand on established science — should be a signal that we are slip-sliding toward governance by emotion rather than reason. But it’s important to understand what’s undergirding the debate. It has little to do with a given candidate’s policy and everything to do with whether he or she believes in God.
If we are descended of some blend of apes, then we can’t have been created in God’s image. If we establish Earth’s age at 4.5 billion years, then we contradict the biblical view that God created the world just 6,500 years ago. And finally, if we say that climate change is partly the result of man’s actions, then God can’t be the One who punishes man’s sins with floods, droughts, earthquakes and hurricanes. If He wants the climate to change, then He will so ordain, and we’ll pray more.
Perry knows he has to make clear that God is his wingman. And this conviction seems not only to be sincere, but also to be relatively noncontroversial in the GOP’s church — and perhaps beyond. He understands that his base cares more that the president is clear on his ranking in the planetary order than whether he can schmooze with European leaders or, heaven forbid, the media. And this is why Perry could easily steal the nomination from Romney.
And also why he probably can’t win a national election, in which large swaths of the electorate would prefer that their president keep his religion close and be respectful of knowledge that has evolved from thousands of years of human struggle against superstition and the kind of literal-mindedness that leads straight to the dark ages.
Faith and reason are not mutually exclusive, but Perry makes you think they are.
