Sheldon Adelson under federal investigation after lawsuit alleges to Chinese organized crime

Sheldon and Miriam Adelson
The billionaire casino mogul who has breathed new life into Newt Gingrich's presidential campaign with millions of dollars in donations is facing a federal investigation over whether his company violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which prohibits bribing foreign officials.

The investigation stems from a lawsuit filed by a former executive at the Sands Macau in China, the company has said. Steven C. Jacobs claims he was told the keep quiet about investigations of local officials and the possible presence of the triads - Chinese organized crime - in the casino.

Sheldon Adelson, who founded and runs Las Vegas Sands Corp -- one of the largest casino and resort companies in the world, has denied the allegations in the lawsuit and said the company is cooperating with federal investigators.

Adelson has donated an estimated $10 million to Gingrich's super PAC 'Winning our Future' and promised to give up to $20 million.

Worth an estimated $21 billion, Adelson is the eighth richest man in America and has almost single-handedly financed Gingrich's second campaign surge.

The large donation has allowed Gingrich supporters to buy TV ads in key states, helping the former House Speaker to defeat Mitt Romney in the South Carolina Republican primary.

But the attention has brought Adelson's business practices into the spotlight. The lawsuit was filed in October 2010 and the company announced the federal inquiry in March of last year.

Adelson addressed the concerns at a public forum last year saying the investigation is 'not a serious matter.

When the smoke clears, I am 1,000 percent positive that there won't be any fire below it,' he said, according to ABC News.

The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice began looking into Las Vegas Sands Corp. as a result of allegations about its practices at Sands Macau casino and hotel, which operates on the Chinese island that has become the largest gambling mecca in the world, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

Jacobs, who ran the resort, says in his lawsuit that he was wrongly fired from the company after he objected to allegedly illegal actions that he was asked to perform.

Among them: Jacobs claims Adelson wanted him to hire a Chinese lawyer to dig up 'negative information' on local Macau officials that the company could use as leverage, the Sun reported.

Jacobs says he also disagreed with Adelson over increasing the casino's use of junkets -- trips to Macau by groups of high-rolling gamblers organized by third-party groups.

Some junkets in Macau have been organized by members of Chinese organized crime syndicates.

Reuters reported in 2010 that alleged triad crime boss Cheung Chi-tai, who was connected with a junket to the Sands Macau, was running one of the VIP rooms at the casino, according to witnesses.

That information came out at a trial of four men convicted of breaking a Sands dealer's arms and legs, allegedly on Chi-tai's orders, according to Reuters.

In his lawsuit, Jacobs says Adelson ordered him to keep Chi-tai's name and any information about possible triad involvement secret from the casino's board of directors.

The Las Vegas Sands Corp. has strenuously denied Jacobs' claims and says he was fired for striking unauthorized deals and violating company policy.Tea Party Chief@2012_TeaParty

Controversy over beliefs surging as 2012 election gets closer

Bob Unruh joined WND in 2006 after spending nearly three decades writing on a wide range of issues for several Upper Midwest newspapers and the Associated Press. Sports, tornadoes, homicidal survivalists, and legislative battles all fell within his bailiwick. His scenic photography has been used commercially, and he sometimes plays in a church worship band.More ↓ Subscribe to author feedThe Obama campaign’s repeated insistence that the president is a Christian is having little impact in two Southern states where a new poll indicates about half of the likely GOP primary voters believe he’s a Muslim.
Skeptics have pointed to his Muslim father and step-father, his Islamic training in Indonesia and his statements that America is no longer a “Christian nation” and can be considered one of the largest Muslim nations. The White House and the Obama campaign, meanwhile, officially have maintained Obama is Christian, sometimes citing his membership in the Chicago church of radical preacher Jeremiah Wright.
No matter to those polled by Public Policy Polling.
The survey of 600 likely Alabama Republican primary voters found a full 14 percent believe Obama to be Christian. But 45 percent said he is Muslim and another 41 percent said they are unsure.
The same question presented to 686 likely Mississippi Republican primary voters found 12 percent believe Obama to be Christian. But 52 percent say he is Muslim and another 36 percent were uncertain.
Washington Times columnist Catherine Poe was startled at the results. She wrote: “No matter what your own political persuasion, such downright ignorance is frightening. But it gets worse when they basically insist that President Obama is a Muslim no matter what he says.”
Religious beliefs have become a 2012 campaign issue, perhaps partly because of GOP candidate Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith.
Republican candidate Rick Santorum has indirectly addressed Obama’s beliefs, denouncing a  “phony theology” espoused by the White House. He described it as a “theology not based on the Bible.”
Franklin Graham, founder of the evangelical relief group Samaritan’s Purse and the son of evangelist Billy Graham, publicly noted that Obama has said he’s a Christian, “so I just have to assume that he is.”
But that less-than-hearty endorsement of Obama’s beliefs set off a firestorm of criticism of Graham.
Among the issues stirring the controversy has been the Obama administration’s demand that Catholic and evangelical Christian employers – against church doctrine and personal religious beliefs – pay for their employees’ birth control, including chemicals that are considered abortifacients.
Obama also has helped advance the aims of homosexual activists, in defiance of Christian teaching.
Just days ago, faith and American freedom historian David Barton ofWallBuilders documented 50 anti-Christian and anti-Jewish actions Obama has taken since assuming office.
Barton concluded Obama is “America’s most biblically hostile U. S. president.”
“When one observes President Obama’s unwillingness to accommodate America’s four-century-long religious conscience protection through his attempts to require Catholics to go against their own doctrines and beliefs, one is tempted to say that he is anti-Catholic,” Barton writes. “But that characterization would not be correct. Although he has recently singled out Catholics, he has equally targeted traditional Protestant beliefs.”
Barton suggests his list – which includes links to stories from NBC, WND, the Los Angeles Times, Christianity Today and dozens of sources – demonstrates a pattern of “disrespectful and appalling treatment” toward anyone who holds to biblical values.
“Perhaps the most accurate description of his antipathy toward Catholics, Protestants, religious Jews and the Jewish nation would be to characterize him as ‘anti-biblical,’” Barton writes. “And then when his hostility toward biblical people of faith is contrasted with his preferential treatment of Muslims and Muslim nations, it further strengthens the accuracy of the anti-biblical descriptor. In fact, there have been numerous clearly documented times when his pro-Islam positions have been the cause of his anti-biblical actions.”
Among the 50 actions taken are:
  • May 2009 – Obama declines to host services for the National Prayer Day (a day established by federal law) at the White House.
  • Oct. 19, 2010 – Obama begins deliberately omitting the phrase about “the Creator” when quoting the Declaration of Independence – an omission he has made on no less than seven occasions.
  • April 2011 – For the first time in American history, Obama urges passage of a non-discrimination law that does not contain hiring protections for religious groups, forcing religious organizations to hire according to federal mandates without regard to the dictates of their own faith, thus eliminating conscience protection in hiring.
  • January 2011 – After a federal law was passed to transfer a World War I memorial in the Mojave Desert to private ownership, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled that the cross in the memorial could continue to stand. But the Obama administration refused to allow the land to be transferred as required by law and refused to allow the cross to be re-erected as ordered by the Court.
  • June 2011 – The Department of Veterans Affairs forbids references to God and Jesus during burial ceremonies at Houston National Cemetery.
  • September 2011 – The Army issues guidelines for Walter Reed Medical Center stipulating, “No religious items (i.e. Bibles, reading materials and/or facts) are allowed to be given away or used during a visit.”
  • February 2012 – The Air Force removes “God” from the patch of Rapid Capabilities Office (the word on the patch was in Latin: Dei).
  • February 2011 – Obama directs the Justice Department to stop defending the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
  • May 2009 – While Obama does not host any National Day of Prayer event at the White House, he does host White House Iftar dinners in honor of Ramadan.
  • 2010 – While every White House traditionally issues hundreds of official proclamations and statements on numerous occasions, this White House avoids traditional biblical holidays and events but regularly recognizes major Muslim holidays, as evidenced by its 2010 statements on Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha.
“Many of these actions are literally unprecedented – this is the first time they have happened in four centuries of American history,” Barton concludes following the full list. “The hostility of President Obama toward biblical faith and values is without equal from any previous American president.”
Movie and television star and WND columnist Chuck Norris suggested no matter what Obama calls himself, he should be judged by his actions.
In a series of commentaries, he explained how Obama is using U.S. Special Envoy Rashad Hussain, his own presidential position and others in his administration to deepen and expand the partnerships between the United States and the religion of Islam.
He also detailed Obama’s real spiritual beliefs based upon a rare, in-depth 2004 interview by a religious reporter for a major newspaper, including his beliefs about prayer, sin, heaven, the Bible and the person of Jesus.
Norris wondered why Obama does not “consider it his responsibility to ‘fight against negative stereotypes’ of Christianity.”
“As president, why doesn’t he defend the rights of Christians too, especially those whose voice and freedoms have been suppressed because of opposition?” Norris wrote.
“In just the last few months, why didn’t the president step forward and stand up publicly for any of the following Christians who had their First Amendment rights trampled upon by others, just as he had done for Muslims who are attempting to build the Ground Zero mosque?”
He continued:
  • “Why doesn’t the president stand up for the rights of Christian organizations, whose rights to hire same faith or mission-minded employees are protected under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the First Amendment, but are right now having to urge Congress to reject legislation that would prohibit them from hiring only fellow believers?
  • “Why didn’t the president stand up for the rights of the North Carolina pastor who was fired from his duties as an honorary chaplain of the state house of representatives after he closed a prayer “in the name of Jesus”?
  • “Why didn’t the president stand up for the rights of those in Utah who erected 14 memorial crosses on highways for state troopers killed in the line of duty, but were told by federal judges they are to come down because they are unconstitutional?
  • “Why didn’t the president himself stand up for the human rights of the Christian missionaries and medical team in Afghanistan, including six Americans, to practice medicine and their faith, even after they were murdered by Islamic extremists? Wouldn’t other medical missionaries in Afghanistan appreciate Obama’s defense more now than ever?
  • “Why didn’t the president stand up for the rights of the Christian student who was booted from her graduate counseling program at a public university over her belief and conviction that homosexuality is morally wrong?
  • “Why didn’t the president stand up for the three Christian evangelists who were arrested for sharing the gospel and singing hymns on a public sidewalk outside an Islamic mosque in Philadelphia?
  • “And, mostly, why didn’t the president stand up for the rights of the Greek Orthodox Church, the only church that was actually destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks, as church leaders have been frustrated and fouled by New York officials who have virtually turned their backs on the reconstruction of the church near Ground Zero?”
“In countless speeches and actions since taking office, Obama has sympathized and supported pro-Islamic ideologies and practice. That is why the New York Times even recently published a multiple-page report on how the “White House quietly courts Muslims in the U.S.,” Norris wrote.Tea Party Chief@2012_TeaParty

Will Obamacare Come Down to Steamboats vs Cows?

By Craig Andresen on March 15, 2012 at 8:51 am
*We are now less than 2 weeks away from opening arguments in the United States Supreme Court regarding Obamacare. The Court will take up the case starting on March 26th and hear arguments through March 28th.
On March 26th, the arguments will center around something very odd, unless of course, you keep an eye on liberals.
March 26th will be a stall tactic by the Obama administration. They will argue that it’s not applicable for the High Court to even hear the case until AFTER the individual mandate kicks in. That, of course, would be 2014. By then, nearly any vestiges of private healthcare would have been laid waste making a return to private healthcare nearly impossible – and IF possible, extremely costly.
The other and possibly more veiled reason for this stall tactic would be the possibility of a new Supreme Court nomination by a reelected Barack Obama.
Either way you look at it, the delay or stall move is one of desperation on behalf of liberals and the Obama administration.
On March 28th, the arguments are again scheduled to revolve around the expansion of Medicaid and its constitutionality and also around the question of whether or not Obamacare as a whole can stand should the individual mandate be struck from it.
The bulk of the case will be heard on March 27th. On that day, the idea that the government can mandate what We The People buy, as goods or services, will be challenged by the 26 Attorneys General who have filed suit against the Obama administration.
This part of the Obamacare case will directly involve the Commerce Clause.
The Obama administration will argue that the government does have the power to mandate the purchase of goods or services under the commerce clause of the Constitution and will no doubt cite several Supreme Court cases which took place between 1937 and 1942.
National Labor Relations Board v. Jones & Laughlin Steel, U.S. v. Darby, and Wickard v. Filburn will likely comprise the bulk of the Obama administration case. These 3 cases radically altered the original intent of the framers and
the CommeWickard v. Filburn will most likely be the Obama administration’s lynchpin.
In THAT case, the Supreme Court found that entities engaged in commerce among the several states when they fed their own wheat to their own cows because these activities in combination had a “substantial effect” on interstate commerce. In reality, they were NOT a part of it but, that’s how THAT Supreme Court saw things and ruled as such. From THIS, the Obama administration will claim that the government DOES have the right to mandate commerce. The Attorneys General who have filed suit AGAINST the Obama administration will most likely point to several United States Supreme Court rulings BEFORE that 1937-1945 time span as evidence that the framers and original intent of the Commerce Clause was a far different matter.

Primary among the cases which will be cited by the 26 Attorneys General is Gibbons v. Ogden in 1924.
THAT case dealt with…STEAMBOATS and whether or not the operators of two steamboats between New Jersey and New York,
Chief Justice John Marshall’s Supreme Court found that, “State inspection laws, health laws, and laws for regulating the internal commerce of a State, and those which respect turnpike roads, ferries, &c. are not within the power granted to Congress.”
Another case likely to be cited by the Attorneys General is, Hammer v. Dagenhart, which, in 1918, found that, Congress was barred from prohibiting the shipment in interstate commerce of goods made in factories that did not conform to the federal minimum age standard for child labor. Once again, it was clear that Congress could not use its power over interstate commerce to control activities that were reserved to the states under the original constitutional scheme. Since, moreover, direct regulation was off-limits to the federal government, so too was taxation. In 1922, the Child Labor Tax cases held that Congress could not seek to pressure the states by taxing all goods made with child labor that were shipped in interstate commerce. The basic constitutional structure held firm.
This is quite important as the Obama administration WILL claim, despite their initial denials, that Obamacare IS a tax and therefore, is constitutional.
Case law is one thing and take my word for it, trying to gain a full understanding of THIS case by reading through all the cases which may be used by both sides of the argument WILL leave your head spinning.
There is, of course, an easier to understand practical side to this Obamacare case.
What Obama wants, goes beyond the federal government’s constitutional right to regulate commerce which by any definition, is activity. Obama wants the federal government to be allowed to regulate INactivity and to do so, they must make the case either that the Commerce Clause provides that right outright or, that the Commerce Clause can be expanded to include that right.
Should the Supreme Court UPHOLD the Individual Mandate, i.e. Obamacare, they WOULD be expanding the Commerce Clause to such an extent that the federal government COULD require ANY citizen to purchase a good or service…ANY good or service, regardless of the individual citizen’s desire to HAVE or utilize that good or service.
Essentially, this means that an administration, ANY administration could mandate that YOU purchase ANYTHING that administration deems necessary for whatever reason that administration chooses.
YOU may well NOT want to own a Chevy Volt but, an administration could MANDATE that you purchase one and you would have no choice in the matter. YOU may well NOT want plant a garden in YOUR back yard but, if an administration MANDATES it, you WOULD have to plant said garden.
YOU may well NOT wish to buy red wine, or visit Gettysburg or use contraception…yes…Use contraception however, if an administration MANDATES it, you WOULD be drinking red wine, visiting Gettysburg and yes…USING contraception.
Are these examples wild hairs or extreme? No, not really. The issue at hand is the opening of floodgates from which there would be no return.
The other practical matter which cannot be ignored, is the Constitution itself. In essence, what we are talking about here is not the proper use of or expansion of the Commerce Clause, it is, in fact, the virtual elimination OF it should the Supreme Court uphold the individual mandate.
This would add to the list of various parts of the Constitution laid waste by Obama and this administration. Advice and consent of Congress, a president who unilaterally decides what laws will and will not be defended, freedom of speech being just some of those essential and foundational elements of the Constitution already done away with in the last 3 years.
While the very case laws which are most apt to be cited BY the Obama administration to uphold Obamacare are those brought about by the greatest expansion of socialism in our history, the New Deal, it should come as little surprise that Obamacare would effectively expand socialism as an ideology foisted upon We The People to an extent never before experienced.
Obamacare IS the natural progression of progressives toward a socialist nation which would have little use for, or nary a need of, the Constitution upon which this nation was built.

Legislation Warns Pres. Obama of
Impeachment Over Military Action
The Daily Caller
A Republican congressman has introduced a bill that appears to warn President Obama that he could be impeached if the United States gets involved militarily in Syria without congressional approval.

The bill introduced last week by North Carolina Rep. Walter Jones declares that it is an impeachable offense for a president to authorize military action against another country without consent from Congress.

Jones spokeswoman Catherine Fodor didn’t return repeated requests for comment about the bill. But it has been reported that it was a response to chatter about the possibility of US military action in Syria.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said during testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee last week that “our goal would be to seek international permission” -- and not necessarily congressional approval -- before taking any military action in Syria.

“And we would come to the Congress and inform you and determine how best to approach this, whether or not we would want to get permission from the Congress,” Panetta said.

A Defense official told CNN that Panetta’s remarks to the committee have been misinterpreted and the defense secretary is not for “ceding US decision-making authority to some foreign body.”

Jones’ bill -- introduced March 7 -- says “the cornerstone of the Republic” is “honoring Congress’s exclusive power to declare war.”

The bill calls “the use of offensive military force by a President without prior and clear authorization of an Act of Congress” an “impeachable high crime and misdemeanor.”

Both Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul and Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich last year called Obama’s authorization of military intervention without congressional approval in Libya an impeachable offense.

Editor's Note: It should be noted here that, constitutionally, there is a credible debate currently taking place among scholars about the validity of the War Powers Act and the Separation of Powers. Constitutionally, Congress has the sole authority to "declare war." But the Constitution also makes the POTUS the Commander-in-Chief of the military for the express reason of affording "quick action" when warranted

Rush Limbaugh’s Sandra Fluke Moment May Have Brought Down the Liberal Establishment

In a previous article, I told how my wife and I cancelled our Sleep Number Bed after the company stopped advertising on the Rush Limbaugh Show. We ordered a Dream Number bed instead. We’ve had two glorious nights of sleep on it. We’re sleeping better because of the bed and because in a very small way we made a statement.
The online computer backup company Carbonite also bailed on Rush’s show as an advertiser. I’ve spoken with a lot of people who would like to drop Carbonite, but they’re locked into year-long contracts. Carbonite stock continues to drop as the stock market continues to rise. “[A]ccording to Terry Ponick of the Washington Times, [Carbonite] now sits at 60% off a 2011 high mark in a difficult market.”
Of course, I’m NOT elated that Carbonite stock has fallen, because the people who are hurt by the stock drop are investors who had no decision-making power to leave the Rush Limbaugh Show as an advertiser. But you’ve got to believe that liberals are shocked by listener reaction to Rush’s show, and for that I am elated.
People who vote with their money is the ultimate act of political defiance. When the checks stop coming, a company has to retool. That’s why liberals want to control every part of the economy. They can’t leave anything to chance. If they can control the media, the voter rolls, the polling data, and how our tax dollars are spent they believe they can control the country. The one item they have not been able to control, at least not yet, is how people spend their money and the free flow of information, something they are trying to control.
Liberals believed that the Sandra Fluke episode would bring down Rush Limbaugh. The news of Rush’s radio death was way too premature. For years liberals have gotten away with saying some of the most outrageous and vile things about their political opponents, and because the mainstream media covered for them, most Americans were not aware of what they spewed out each day.
AF — After Fluke — Liberals had to start defending the antics of liberal commentators who ridiculed conservative women with demeaning sexual putdowns. Democrats had to explain why they could take a $1 million donation from the vile Bill Maher and still condemn Rush Limbaugh for calling Sandra Fluke a “slut” when these same women were extolling the virtues of the “Vagina Monologues” where the word c**t “is a lovely word despite its disconcerting connotations.” It’s a glorious thing to watch.
There are indications that Rush Limbaugh’s ratings are going up as a result of the Sandra Fluke controversy. “The irony is that [Rush Limbaugh] probably right now has the biggest audience he’s had in years, and the double irony of all this is sponsors that are fleeing, they’re missing out on the best advertising buy in radio,” radio expert Michael Harrison told Washington’s Daily Caller in an interview.
According to the Daily Caller, “Limbaugh’s fans, said Harrison, will galvanize around him, not abandon him. Many of his detractors are listening because they feel vindicated, he explained, and still others are tuning in to hear what the fuss is about.”
There’s a lesson in all of this. America still has a chance. I meet and speak with people from all over the country who are fed up but don’t know how to give voice to their frustrations. Rush Limbaugh’s Sandra Fluke moment, although not pretty or well executed, may have been the catalyst to shut the mouths of liberal pundits who have gotten away with character assassination for decades.
It’s great sleeping on a Dream Number bed.

Conservative Catholics rally against contraception mandate

Conservative Catholic groups are warning Democrats that there may be political ramifications for backing the White House’s controversial contraception mandate.
“If Democrats lose the Catholic vote, I would think they at some point will question whether their allegiance to the far-left social extremists is going to hurt” in future elections, Brian Burch, the president of the conservative website CatholicVote.org, told The Daily Caller.
“We do plan to make sure that faithful Catholics remember this [directive] in November,” said Matt Smith, director of the conservative group Catholic Advocate, told TheDC. Despite progressive efforts to shift the debate to contraceptives, he said, using new media has allowed Catholics to argue that the mandate is a threat to religious autonomy.
“That has a huge impact,” he said.
One prominent example of the progressive pushback against the conservative protests was displayed on Monday when liberal Catholic columnist E.J. Dionne said further resistance to government regulations would convert the Church into “the Tea Party at prayer.”
Dionne’s rhetorical warning-shot to Catholics came the day before the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops holds its biannual management meeting, dubbed the “administrative conference.”
Roughly 30 bishops will meet in D.C. on Tuesday to set the schedule for this year’s June and November meetings of the nation’s roughly 181 bishops. The June meeting will be held in Atlanta, and will deal with routine issues of doctrine and budgets, as well as the proper response to the regulation, issued Feb. 10, that would force religious-affiliated institutions to provide insurance that covers contraception.

On Monday, Dionne portrayed the meeting as the moment where bishops will either “defend the church’s legitimate interest in religious autonomy [by accepting the Feb. 10 regulation], or… wage an election-year war against President [Barack] Obama.”
Dionne, whose support for the Feb. 10 announcement has been frequently highlighted by White House officials, urged the religious leaders to accept the decision.
“Before the bishops accuse Obama of being an enemy of the faith, they might look for a settlement that’s within reach — one that would give the church the accommodations it needs while offering women the health coverage they need,” he wrote.
Some Catholic advocates shrugged off Dionne’s criticism.
“Name a single bishop that is in support of the mandate? — there isn’t one,” said Burch. “Functionally, [Dionne] is a member of the Obama reelection team, so you can’t take him seriously,” he added.
Dionne is a “cheerleader for the administration,” George Weigel, an influential Catholic theologian, told TheDC.
The Bishops recognize the dispute is over churches’ freedom, not birth control, “and will stay on-message… no matter how much E.J. Dionne disapproves,” said Weigel who is also a fellow at the D.C.-based Ethics and Public Policy Center.
Although the head of the Catholic Health Association and a Jesuit group have endorsed the Feb. 10 regulation, there’s little visible support elsewhere in the church for a federal role in church management.
For example, Fr. Michael Pfleger, a noted progressive Catholic priest in Chicago, declined to comment on the issue, despite several calls from TheDC.

Church officials, along with allied religious leaders in other Christian and Jewish denominations, are trying to avoid direct involvement in partisan politics, even as they rally against the Feb. 10 edict.
Instead, religious leaders are urging their members to get more involved in politics via groups that are organizationally and legally independent of the church, despite sharing similar religious beliefs.
On Mar. 3 for example, New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan declared that Church officials will remain focused on religion, but urged believers to get more engaged in politics.
“We leave a lot of the messiness of politics up to you,” he said, adding that Catholics “are called to be very active, very informed and very involved in politics.”
Smith’s Catholic Advocate group has recruited at least one person in every congressional district to spread their message. And the Church is indirectly boosting the effort, Smith said, because “every single bishop in the country issued some form of a public denunciation of this government coercion.”
Burch says he expects “to raise several million dollars at a minimum,” and is already conducting focus groups and producing radio and TV ads.
“We’ve very encouraged by the data we’re seeing out in the states… by and large, whether you’re religious or not, the preference would be for a policy that respects and exempts religious institutions,” he said.
Voters also recognize, he said, that there is “no need for the government to be picking a fight with religions at this time [and] when religious institutions are functioning and are able to work side-by-side with government.”
The potential upside for conservatives in this dispute, he added, is that Obama’s regulation could have as much impact on the 2012 election as gun control had on the 2000 election. That year, Democratic candidate Al Gore lost his home state — and the presidency – in large part because of his support for firearms regulations.
Since then, progressives and liberals have avoided the issue of gun control, and the Supreme Court’s judges have accepted that individuals’ rights to firearms trumps most gun-curbs.
The president’s act requires religious communities to do something they oppose and fund the use of free contraceptives, birth control drugs and abortifacients.
Some religious communities — especially the Catholic Church — have religious objections to recreational sex.
Many other religious communities — evangelical, Baptist, Jewish, Lutheran and others — say the First Amendment’s protections deny Obama the power to regulate religious groups’ practice of their own religion.
Obama’s mandate was first announced Jan. 20. It says that churches that pass a four-part government test can win a conditional exclusion from the mandate.
But schools, hospitals, universities and charities run by religious communities must comply with the mandate, or pay expensive fines, according to the regulation.
On Feb. 10, Obama said he will “accommodate” the objections. He said he would direct health-insurance companies to provide unwanted services for free to employees, instead of having the churches directly pay the insurance companies for those services.
However, Obama did not change the text of the Jan. 20 regulation, which was enacted Feb. 10, and did not acknowledge any error.
Prior to the controversy, White House did not estimate how many women would be aided by the regulation, or why the existing Title X contraceptive program can’t be used to offer free-contraceptives to women.
Since Feb. 10, Obama’s campaign-trail allies have rallied behind the claim that religious groups’ objection to the mandate is part of a “war on women” and seeks to shut down the free market in contraceptives. Democratic advocates say this policy has increased their polling support among women, which has been hurt by the stalled economy since 2009.

Blagojevich, Prison-Bound Thursday, Makes Final Public Statement (PHOTOS, TWITTER REACTIONS)

MICHAEL TARM   03/14/12 08:50 PM ET

CHICAGO — Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich embraced the public spotlight one last time Wednesday, claiming on the day before he reports to prison that he always believed what he did was legal and expressing faith that an appeal of his corruption convictions will succeed.
The famously talkative Blagojevich seemed to relish the attention as he spoke to a throng of television cameras, reporters and well-wishers outside his Chicago home less than 24 hours before he was due to arrive at a Colorado prison to begin serving a 14-year sentence. He was convicted on 18 counts during two trials, including charges that he tried to sell or trade an appointment to President Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat.
"While my faith in things has sometimes been challenged, I still believe this is America, this is a country that is governed by the rule of law, that the truth ultimately will prevail," the impeached governor said during an event that seemed part farewell, part campaign rally.
"As bad as it is, (this) is the beginning of another part of a long and hard journey that will only get worse before it gets better, but that this is not over."
Supporters chanted "free our governor" and "he's not guilty," and a banner hung over a railing on Blagojevich's porch read: "Thanks Mr. Governor. We Will Pray." After his statement, Blagojevich signed autographs and chatted with supporters.
Standing beside his wife, the 55-year-old father of two daughters appeared emotional at times. He said preparing to leave for prison is "the hardest thing I've ever done" and that he had difficulty even saying he was going to prison.
But at other moments, he appeared to be back on the campaign stump, insisting that he always did what he thought was right for Illinois. Blagojevich said he "actually helped real ordinary people" and listed what he believed were his accomplishments as governor, including expanding health care for children and not raising taxes.
During his sentencing in December, he apologized for his actions by saying he "caused it all" and was "just so incredibly sorry."
But Blagojevich seemed less contrite on Wednesday, calling his troubles a "calamity" that had befallen his family and saying he always believed what he was doing "was on the right side of the law."
The crowd outside his Northwest Side bungalow grew to more than 300 strong, spilling people onto the street and stumbling into the family's rose bushes. Blagojevich was nearly knocked down by the surging crowd as he came out of his house and down the steps holding his wife's hand.
As the disgraced governor made his way back through the crowd after speaking, several women leaned in to kiss him. One, in her late 50s, reached over to stroke his hair.
When he reports Thursday to the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood in suburban Denver, he will become the second Illinois governor in a row sent to prison for corruption. Former Gov. George Ryan is serving a 6 1/2-year sentence in a federal prison in Terre Haute, Ind.
Blagojevich's attorneys had said he wanted to depart in a dignified way, without a media frenzy. But he timed his departing statement to begin at precisely 5:02 p.m. so it could appear live on the evening news. His publicist even gave a two-minute warning via Twitter so newscasts could be ready.
More than 50 reporters crowded to hear the former governor as two television helicopters hovered overhead and a dozen TV trucks were parked nearby.
Blagojevich spoke about how difficult his imprisonment would be on his wife and two daughters, Amy and Annie, who will be young women before their father is released. Amid the frenzy, his youngest daughter walked out of the house and stared down at the raucous scene – unsmiling and seemingly bewildered.
"We are teaching our kids that in hard times, in tears, you've got to live in your hopes and not your fears," he said.
After his wife retreated to the house, Blagojevich lingered on his porch steps, chatting with supporters, hugging children and bantering with reporters. At one point, the self-proclaimed Elvis Presley fan told supporters, "Jailhouse Rock is no longer my favorite song."
Federal agents arrested the then-governor at his home on Dec. 9, 2008. When an FBI official called to tell Blagojevich agents were at his door to arrest him, he reportedly responded in disbelief, "Is this a joke?"
After his arrest, Blagojevich hit the talk-show circuit to declare his innocence and to rail against prosecutors, even appearing on Donald Trump's reality show, "The Apprentice."
Blagojevich took the witnesses stand at his retrial, telling jurors that his talk about selling Obama's seat was just that – talk.
In the end, though, it did him little good. His first trial in 2011 ended with jurors deadlocked on all but one count. The next year, jurors were more decisive and convicted Blagojevich on 17 of 20 counts.
In Colorado, Blagojevich – whose penchant for expensive suits and lavish spending were outlined at his first trial – will have no luxuries. The prison complex is encircled by double, razor-wire fencing and is well-guarded. Inside, inmates must wake at dawn, work menial jobs and submit to head counts at all hours of the day.
"This is the hardest thing I've ever had to do," Blagojevich told the crowd in Chicago. "But it is the law, and we follow the law, and I will begin to do that tomorrow."

#Karzai quite frankly, we have helped you enough, to our own detriment and now yours
#Karzai take responsibility for your country's operation, fund your own country legitimately and you would not be asking us for help
#Karzai while one's man health falters and his will fails him, it is not right for you to continue to blame American for everything
#Karzai I say these things to you, because it is improper to say nothing and rude to not speak to you in your grief, as if it doesn't matter
#Karzai stop coming to us with your hand out: we are squelching your business and drying up your illegal U.S. markets so #ADAPT

#Karzai in your understandable haste to ask us to leave immediately, don't whine and bemoan Russia not helping you, us, or China
#Karzai Republicans and Democrats have had their day in the sun as political elite ruling class, NOW THE PEOPLE WILL DECIDE, the Tea Party
#Karzai we now control how the money is spent, and no matter the more or less vocal, we will continue to turn over Democrat leadership
#Karzai I'm telling you that you will be dealing with the Tea Party for the next 20-30yrs. and you need to find someone who can deal with it
Our voice has been a lawful progression-a peaceful challenge of the law that #Democrats hate but we have changed everything without violence
If our government ever became that like #Assad you will not get the cooperation you do now, because we will not tolerate this
#Karzai you must make your case to your people that you will rule fairly and without our money
#Karzai our government abuses the law, but the day they turn to bloodshed as #Assad has done, their will be a new government here
@hale_razor Last summer, we should've left #Afghanistan immediately: we have done the job, Osama has been declared dead, they wanted peace.
#Karzai Muslims everywhere must stop supporting #AlQaeda through#CorruptCleric who pass money and do things of terror to your own people
#Karzai in order for your relationship to not be dispossessed like#Assad you must hold the #Taliban accountable-be truthful to earn respect
#Karzai when you oppress your own people, they will eventually find out the truth, and then you are not able to control them.
#Karzai you think that because you play diplomat that you are different than #Assad #Gaddafi #Osama or #Saddam ???
#Karzai the #Taliban has been manipulated by religion and by corrupt leadership, and that is what makes peace difficult, your role Karzai.
#Karzai I also feel sorry for the #Taliban because they are like many people in street gangs here in the United States abused by both sides.
#Karzai what we are tired of is you telling your people that the Taliban are necessary to protect us and then fund them behind our backs.
#Karzai but do not insult our intelligence or think we are moved by the protests when you did not ask for the ashes of the Korans
#Karzai but that does not mean I take matters into my own hands or not put a leader into power who will deal with you appropriately
#Karzai I'll be honest: I do not like you, may never like you so I don't want you in charge in Afghanistan because you're corrupt in my book
#Karzai surely the actions of one man provoked do not mean you lay blame to an entire people who have funded and supported you in dark times
#Karzai while all of us can appreciate the anger and despair you feel, we have lost countless avenging ours and protecting you from terror.
#Karzai we are not concerned with the #Taliban breaking their peace treaty negotiations as they have continued to bomb since last summer.
#Karzai we do not try anyone convicted of terrorism on U.S. soil for the same reason ours will never be tried by your country.

Analysis: Options for military intervention in Syria
By Jonathan MarcusBBC Diplomatic Correspondent

Syria Crisis

Since the outset of the Syria crisis in March 2011 there has been little appetite for outside military intervention. This has been based on two assessments.
Firstly, that the situation on the ground in Syria is in many ways very different from that in Libya - the opposition is much more divided, the government's security forces are much stronger, and Syria's air defences are more effective.
Secondly, there has been a view that the implications of toppling President Bashar al-Assad could prompt a much wider wave of instability in the region.
Unlike Libya, Syria - both politically and geographically - is a central player in the Arab world, and sectarianism and instability there could threaten both Lebanon and Iraq.

“Start Quote

The further militarization of the crisis is inevitable”
Steven HeydemannUnited States Institute of Peace
Then, of course, there is the fundamental legal problem. Constrained by Russian and Chinese vetoes at the UN Security Council, there is no possibility of getting a resolution to authorise force.
That has not always mattered in the past. Nato troops went into Kosovo, after all, to halt systematic abuses by Serbian forces.
But the absence of legal authorisation certainly precludes action when there is little enthusiasm for it in the first place.
So what are we to make of calls from senior Republican politicians in the US, like Senator John McCain, urging air strikes against Syrian security forces?
Joshua Landis, director of the Centre for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma, says: "Despite the growing chorus of politicians calling for US leadership in Syria, the Obama administration is adamant that Washington should not take the lead, but follow regional partners, Saudi Arabia and Turkey."
The Obama administration has so far ruled out military intervention in Syria
Mr Landis argues that the simple fact is that the Obama administration sees no strong reason to intervene.
"US officials are unanimous in arguing that the Assad regime is doomed and can only hang on for a limited time, with or without increased US support for the Syrian opposition. I think they are right in this analysis."
"This means that the US has no compelling national security interest in jumping into the Syrian civil war that is emerging. The regime's days are numbered."
Much of the debate on outside intervention is vague. It confuses and makes false distinctions between the different options and to a large extent glosses over many of the fundamental problems facing them all.Humanitarian focus
Assistance and relief
The main thrust of any external action would be essentially humanitarian in nature, a response to the growing plight of civilians in Syrian towns and cities who are under bombardment by government forces.
Thousands of Syrians have fled their homes since the outbreak of violence last year
Efforts could also be made to bring assistance to displaced refugees who have moved towards Syria's frontiers with Turkey and Lebanon. Three related measures are being discussed.
Humanitarian corridors
Suggested first by the French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe last year, the idea would be to establish short corridors into Syrian territory through which humanitarian supplies could be delivered.
Safe zones
The establishment of safe areas within Syrian territory is an idea that has been broached by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu. Such safe havens would be in border areas, acting as a place of safety where refugees could gather, be fed and sheltered, and so on.
Tea Party Chief@2012_TeaParty
@RickSantorum I really like who you said inspired you to run for President "the least of these" is who Jesus says our focus should be :D
@SenJohnMcCain While this will lower gas prices and force other nations to address inflation as we are on how we spend, we must prepare.
@SenJohnMcCain We will need more #ammo #gas regardless, we need to make preparations now, get #Chinese to make us #bulletswe'll need it.
@YahooNews Without responding, we are leaving the entire world at risk to what #Assad will do next, what will set up in #Syria as it weakens
@YahooNews Yes I unequivocally think that swift response to #Assadis not only the right thing to do, but #Assad has left us no recourse.

No-fly zones
Often discussed in relation to both of the above, the suggestion is that Western air power could help ensure the safety of the zones or corridors.

Syrian military strength

Manpower
Active military manpower - 325,000
Active mobilised army manpower - 220,000
Land weapons
Tanks - 4,950
Armoured Fighting Vehicles, Armoured Personnel Carriers - 3,950
Artillery - 3,440
Air forces
Combat aircraft - 555
Fighters - 150
Armed helicopters - 71
Naval forces
Frigates - 2
Missile patrol boats - 21
Source: CSIS (2010)
In itself air power would not halt the fighting. It is not the Syrian Air Force that is primarily involved in offensives on opposition strongholds - although activists say jets and helicopters have been used to carry our reconnaissance and occasionally air strikes - but the government's ground forces.
But a discussion of air power underscores that unless the Syrian authorities agree to allow humanitarian access, any safe zones or corridors would first have to be established by force and then defended by force.
The horror of Srebrenica in the Balkans showed what can happen if there is no will to defend a safe haven once created.
The key point here is that even the options directed primarily at humanitarian relief require significant military elements too. They involve seizing and holding bits of Syrian territory and a willingness to take on Syrian forces if necessary.
Air power would be crucial - though Western warplanes would have to contend with Syria's reasonably sophisticated air defences. Boots would almost certainly be needed on the ground too. These are not "military lite" options.Military focus
Changing the balance of power
These options seek to accelerate the processes already at work in Syria both by strengthening the opposition forces and thus seeking to increase the pressure on the Syrian authorities.
The Syrian army was able to use its military superiority to crush resistance in Homs
Regime change would be the goal, though it is unlikely to be presented as such. Again, a range of strategies are available.
Logistical support for armed rebel groups
This is already being discussed at a high-level in Washington. The idea would be to provide medical supplies and non-lethal equipment such as radios to make the opposition more effective.
For some this is seen as the thin end of the wedge, leading to the arming of rebel forces. This is certainly what happened in Libya.
Maritime interdiction
The aim here would be to limit weaponry and munitions going to the Syrian government.
Rebel fighters have until now had to find and buy their own ammunition, and train each other
In the absence of UN Security Council action, this would rest on shaky legal ground. It might also mean being willing to halt Russian shipping, since it is Moscow that remains the Assad regime's principle armourer.
Arming the rebels
Both Qatar and Saudi Arabia have voiced their support for arming the opposition forces in Syria. Simon Henderson, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, believes that both these countries may already be supplying small quantities of weaponry.
"In part, the bloodshed in Homs will have increased the determination of both countries to help - despite neither being a democracy," he says. "They are subject to pressure from their own public opinions who, like the rest of us, have watched the dreadful scenes on television."
However, Mr Henderson says that these weapons "probably won't make much difference".
"The Syrian rebels need to be much better organised. Once they are organised they can make good use of any communications that is supplied - ie they need command and control. Currently, they appear to have neither."
The Syrian army's commanders and soldiers have so far largely stayed loyal to the regime
Pressuring the Syrian military
Indeed, Mr Henderson says that arming the opposition "is not necessarily the best tactic", and getting the Syrian army to flip might be a better way of getting rid of President Assad.
"Pressure, needs to be put on different division commanders," he argues.
"The US can no doubt identify the commanders and possibly communicate with them - it did this sort of thing during the invasion of Iraq."
"Of course," he notes, the risk is that "this might only bring about a new military-led regime".

Punitive air attacks
When the offensive against Homs was at its height, the US very publicly released satellite photos showing Syrian artillery batteries and rocket launchers attacking the city.
Any attack against Syria would have to be on a much larger scale compared to that seen in Libya
There were two messages here - one was that the world was watching and documenting what was happening; the second was perhaps a potential threat - what can be seen from the air can be hit from the air.
But as yet there is simply no appetite in Washington to engage in another military conflict in the Middle East.
Any attack against Syria would have to be on a much larger scale compared to the military operations launched against Libya.
Indeed, initial US military assessments suggest that a protracted campaign against Syria's integrated air defences, due to their location, could lead to serious civilian loss of life. For now such an operation is simply not on President Barack Obama's agenda.Intervention: the wider debate
An active discussion about the merits or pitfalls of intervention is nonetheless being waged in both Arab and Western capitals. The crisis in Syria is so serious and the stakes are so high that nobody wants to rule out any option. Much, of course, depends upon how things develop.
The Free Syrian Army's leaders admit they have little control of fighters on the ground
A central concern in the debate relates to weapons supplies and their impact, not so much on the struggle between the Assad regime and the opposition, but on the Syria that eventually emerges from this crisis.
"There are many divisions among the Syrian opposition, but all the militant groups want to bring down the regime," Joshua Landis says. "The divisions will not minimise the impact of outside weapons supplies, but they will inhibit any stable government from replacing the present Syrian Army."
So, could a further militarization of the conflict lead to prolonged civil war should the Assad regime collapse?
"Yes," Mr Landis answers. "The sectarian and ethnic divisions in Syria are a recipe for prolonged struggle as is the case in Iraq, Palestine-Israel, and Lebanon."
"Decapitating the Syrian regime, through outside intervention," he believes, will provide no guarantee of ending the killing.
"On the contrary, it could well accelerate the killing if there is no unified leadership which can assume control of Syria and no militia that can impose some order in the place of the Syrian national army. If the sort of civil war that Iraq experienced breaks out, the killing could well spike."
Managing militarization
Steven Heydemann of the United States Institute of Peace shares these concerns but comes to a rather different conclusion.
"The further militarization of the crisis is inevitable," he says.
The Friends of Syria meeting failed to attract the crucial support of China and Russia
"As the regime escalates its use of force against civilians, the armed opposition will expand, and will come to play an even more central role in the uprising than it has to date."
"Arms are flowing into Syria across all of its borders - to varying degrees - and the unwillingness of the West or Turkey to endorse the arming of the opposition will not affect this trend," he adds.
"The single biggest danger of militarization", he warns, "is that it empowers and gives legitimacy to the armed opposition and contributes to the marginalisation of the political opposition, which is perceived as ineffective in providing protection to civilians who bear the brunt of regime violence."
"Increasingly, it is the men with guns who wield power in areas outside of government control, with very troubling implications for Syria's future."

Mr Heydemann's answer is to push for a strategy of what he calls "managing militarization".
"This would include creating a framework, perhaps through diplomatic body the 'Friends of Syria', that would empower civilian elements of the Syrian opposition, perhaps the newly-formed military affairs bureau of the Syrian National Council, with responsibility for managing efforts to train, equip, and develop the command and control infrastructure of the armed opposition."
However, Mr Heydemann is under no illusions about the ability of outside actors to manage events inside Syria. Nonetheless, he fears that "without some effort along these lines, I am afraid that the consequences of uncontrolled militarization will be quite destructive".
Evolving policy
Policy, though, inevitably changes over time. The drivers will be events on the ground inside Syria and the reaction to these events from outside the country.

• Messages show Bashar al-Assad took advice from Iran

• Leader made light of promised reforms

• Wife spent thousands on jewellery and furniture

Bashar al-Assad took advice from Iran on how to handle the uprising against his rule, according to a cache of what appear to be several thousand emails received and sent by the Syrian leader and his wife.
The Syrian leader was also briefed in detail about the presence of western journalists in the Baba Amr district of Homs and urged to "tighten the security grip" on the opposition-held city in November.
The revelations are contained in more than 3,000 documents that activists say are emails downloaded from private accounts belonging to Assad and his wife Asma.
The messages, which have been obtained by the Guardian, are said to have been intercepted by members of the opposition Supreme Council of the Revolution group between June and early February.
The documents, which emerge on the first anniversary of the rebellion that has seen more than 8,000 Syrians killed, paint a portrait of a first family remarkably insulated from the mounting crisis and continuing to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle.
They appear to show the president's wife spending thousands of dollars over the internet for designer goods while he swaps entertaining internet links on his iPad and downloads music from iTunes.
As the world watched in horror at the brutal suppression of protests across the country and many Syrians faced food shortages and other hardships, Mrs Assad spent more than £10,000 on candlesticks, tables and chandeliers from Paris and instructed an aide to order a fondue set from Amazon.
The Guardian has made extensive efforts to authenticate the emails by checking their contents against established facts and contacting 10 individuals whose correspondence appears in the cache. These checks suggest the messages are genuine, but it has not been possible to verify every one.
The emails also appear to show that:
• Assad established a network of trusted aides who reported directly to him through his "private" email account – bypassing both his powerful clan and the country's security apparatus.
• Assad made light of reforms he had promised in an attempt to defuse the crisis, referring to "rubbish laws of parties, elections, media".
• A daughter of the emir of Qatar, Hamid bin Khalifa al-Thani, this year advised Mr and Mrs Assad to leave Syria and suggested Doha may offer them exile.
• Assad sidestepped extensive US sanctions against him by using a third party with a US address to make purchases of music and apps from Apple's iTunes.
• A Dubai-based company, al-Shahba, with a registered office in London is a key conduit for Syrian government business and private purchases of Mrs Assad.
Activists say they were passed username and password details believed to have been used by the couple by a mole in the president's inner circle. The email addresses used the domain name alshahba.com, a group of companies used by the regime. They say the details allowed uninterrupted access to the two inboxes until the leak was discovered in February.
The emails appear to show how Assad assembled a team of aides to advise him on media strategy and how to position himself in the face of increasing international criticism of his regime's attempts to crush the uprising, which is now thought to have left 10,000 dead.
Activists say they were able to monitor the inboxes of Assad and his wife in real time for several months. In several cases they claim to have used information to warn colleagues in Damascus of imminent regime moves against them.
The access continued until 7 February, when a threatening email arrived in the inbox thought to be used by Assad after the account's existence was revealed when the Anonymous group separately hacked into a number of Syrian government email addresses. Correspondence to and from the two addresses ceased on the same day.
The emails appear to show that Assad received advice from Iran or its proxies on several occasions during the crisis. Before a speech in December his media consultant prepared a long list of themes, reporting that the advice was based on "consultations with a good number of people in addition to the media and political adviser for the Iranian ambassador".
The memo advised the president to use "powerful and violent" language and to show appreciation for support from "friendly states". It also advised that the regime should "leak more information related to our military capability" to convince the public that it could withstand a military challenge.
The president also received advice from Hussein Mortada, an influential Lebanese businessman with strong connections to Iran. In December, Mortada urged Assad to stop blaming al-Qaida for an apparent twin car bombing in Damascus, which took place the day before an Arab League observer mission arrived in the country. He said he had been in contact with Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon who shared his view.
"It is not out of our interest to say that al-Qaida is behind the operation because this claim will [indemnify] the US administration and Syrian opposition," Mortada wrote not long after the blasts. "I have received contacts from Iran and Hezbollah in my role as director of many Iranian-Lebanese channels and they directed me to not mention that al-Qaida is behind the operation. It is a blatant tactical media mistake."
In another email Mortada advised the president that the regime needed to take control of public squares between 3pm and 9pm to deny opposition groups the opportunity to gather there.
Iran and Hezbollah have been accused throughout the year-long uprising of providing on-the-ground support to the regime crackdown, including sending soldiers to fight alongside regime forces and technical experts to help identify activists using the internet. Iran and Hezbollah both deny offering anything more than moral support.
Among those who communicated with the president's account were Khaled al-Ahmed who, it is believed, was given the task of advising about Homs and Idlib. In November Ahmed wrote to Assad urging him to "tighten the security grip to start [the] operation to restore state control in Idlib and Hama countryside".
He also advised Assad that he had been told European reporters had "entered the area by crossing the Lebanese borders illegally". In another mail he warned the president that "a tested source who met with leaders of groups in Baba Amr today said a big shipment of weapons coming from Libya will arrive to the shores of one of the neighbouring states within three days to be smuggled to Syria".
The emails offer a rare window into the mind of the isolated Syrian leader, apparently lurching between self-pity, defiance and flippancy as he swapped links to amusing video footage with his aides and wife. On one occasion he forwards to an aide a link to YouTube footage of a crude re-enactment of the siege of Homsusing toys and biscuits.
Throughout 2011, his wife appears to have kept up regular correspondence with the Qatar emir's daughter, Mayassa al-Thani. But relations appear to have chilled early this year when Thani directly suggested that the Syrian leader step down.
"My father regards President Bashar as a friend, despite the current tensions – he always gave him genuine advice," she wrote on 11 December. "The opportunity for real change and development was lost a long time ago. Nevertheless, one opportunity closes, others open up – and I hope its not too late for reflection and coming out of the state of denial."
A second email on 30 January was more forthright and including a tacit offer of exile. "Just been following the latest developments in Syria … in all honesty – looking at the tide of history and the escalation of recent events – we've seen two results – leaders stepping down and getting political asylum or leaders being brutally attacked. I honestly think this is a good opportunity to leave and re-start a normal life. I only pray that you will convince the president to take this an opportunity to exit without having to face charges. The region needs to stabilise, but not more than you need peace of mind. I am sure you have many places to turn to, including Doha."
The direct line of reporting to Assad, independent of the police state's military and intelligence agencies, was a trait of his father, Hafez al-Assad, who ruled Syria for three decades until his death in 2000 ushered the then 36-year-old scion into the presidency. Assad Sr was renowned for establishing multiple reporting lines from security chiefs and trusted aides in the belief that it would deny the opportunity for any one agency to become powerful enough to pose a threat to him. His son has reputedly shown the same instincts through his decade of rule. The year-long uprising against his decade of rule appeared to be faltering this week as forces loyal to Assad retook the key northern city of Idlib.
Much of Assad's media advice comes from two young US-educated Syrian women, Sheherazad Jaafari and Hadeel al-Al. Both regularly stress to Assad, who uses the address sam@alshahba, the importance of social media and the importance of intervening in online discussions. At one point, Jaafari boasts that CNN has fallen for a nom-de-guerre that she set up to post pro-regime remarks. The emails also reveal that the media team has convinced Twitter to close accounts that purport to represent the Syrian regime.
Several weeks after sam@alshahba.com email was compromised in February, a new Syrian state TV channel broadcast two segments denying the email address had been used by Assad. Opposition activists claim that this was a pre-emptive move to discredit any future leaking of the emails.
On Wednesday Assad announced new parliamentary elections to be held across Syria on 7 May. The move appears to be in response to Kofi Annan's demand following his visit to Damascus over the weekend for a ceasefire coupled with elections. Activists have described a referendum last month that paved the way for the poll as a sham.
There was further bloodshed on the ground. Opposition activists said government forces killed dozens of people near a mosque in the city of Idlib, with rebels killing at least 10 troops in the same area. In Homs, residents said the old part of the city came under government bombardment. They also reported a massacre of 53 people in the Karm el-Zeytoun area of south-east Homs.

The US president, Barack Obama, signed an executive order last May imposing sanctions against Assad and other Syrian government officials.
In addition to freezing their US assets, the order prohibited "US persons" from engaging in transactions with them. The EU adopted similar measures against Assad last year. They include an EU-wide travel ban for the Syrian president and an embargo on military exports to Syria.

@snoopy4ali #Assad has upped the ante, he has taken action that no leader in the modern world would do, or has done since #Hitler
@snoopy4ali Our govt. has been slowly suffocating us, and that is what these other people feel around the world about their government too.
@snoopy4ali our govt. has been controlling people #politically with money, by abortion, and by massive increase in laws/inflation taxation
@snoopy4ali that is what #Assad has done -- this is #genocide it is not legitimate military action by #Syria

@snoopy4ali #Assad is not killing only insurrectionists or sending military out to get them, HE IS KILLING EVERYONE WITHOUT DISCRETION.
@snoopy4ali If #Syria would do that to their own people, what would they do to Israel, what would they do to us?
@snoopy4ali We can not tolerate any world leader who uses violence against his own people, to massacre them, as a means of control.
@snoopy4ali In what I said http://teapartychief.blogspot.com/ was not to disagree with #JohnMcCain on Syria -- Obama is not right on this!!!!!!!!!!!

Turkey has sought action against President Assad and called for humanitarian access for the civilians

Soner Cagaptay - a Turkey specialist also at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, says that the evolution of Ankara's approach is a case in point.
"Initially, Turkey sought to build UN-led action against President Assad. When that failed, Turkey turned to the Arab League and Friends of Syria group to build internationally-sanctioned policy against Damascus," he says.
"At the same time, Ankara started to host and coach the Syrian opposition. Now, Ankara's policy is entering a third phase, namely calling for humanitarian access for the civilians. This suggests getting relief to the civilians."

"But", he adds, "if that policy, too, fails to end the crackdown, the next step will likely be a move into phase four, namely actively arming the opposition in an effort to create a more robust resistance and protection for civilians against Assad's crackdown."
"The final step in Ankara's Syria policy, if this measure too fails to deliver a concrete victory, against Assad would be calling for no-fly zone inside Syria to protect civilians."
That, as discussed above, could be a prelude to some broader outside military intervention.
But there is a growing pessimism about what external actors can do. So far, diplomatic efforts have delivered little.
As Steven Heydemann notes: "The recent Tunis meeting was a significant disappointment. It raises very serious questions about what the Friends of Syria group will be able to accomplish."

The value of the Syrian pound has plummeted as a result of sanctions by the EU and US
Perhaps more encouraging for President Assad's opponents is the impact of economic sanctions.
Joshua Landis says sanctions are devastating the Syrian economy and have led to sharp falls in the value of the Syrian pound.
"They are encouraging some people to leave the country and others to take up arms. It will not be long before hunger and deprivation begin playing an important role in the disturbances."
Furthermore, Mr Landis says, the sanctions "are weakening the government's ability to reassure businessmen that the regime can provide for them".
Over time this will serve to detach key groups from their support for the regime.
But there are no immediate answers on either the economic or diplomatic fronts, and for all the talk of military action of varying kinds, the simple fact remains that without a clear political framework for Syria's future, the toppling of President Assad could simply precipitate the country's fall into bloody chaos.Tea Party Chief@2012_TeaParty
@SenFeinstein You now see the effects of ineffective governance and financial management with the lack of #IncomeTax and#StateSalesTax $
@SenFeinstein When government does not do its job, it does not receive revenue: taking it from my Social Sec. to imprison me equally wrong.
@SenFeinstein Meaning, just because I was slighted does not mean I can inject that into what we do need for security measures and budget.
@SenFeinstein My own personal bias can not overwhelm the safety of the whole, no matter that it was wrong to hold me or force the plea.
@SenFeinstein For misapplication of the Patriot Act, you now have the birth of the Tea Party as a result of that imprisonment.
@SenFeinstein the letter that I received for the renewal of the Patriot Act for another 5yrs. was a slap in the face for the year in prison
@SenFeinstein the NDAA does not remove the disparity created by the Patriot Act, it does define the mission, but does not remove bad law.
@SenFeinstein That is because I had not extensive record, never been arrested prior, and actually nearly completed my probation.
@SenFeinstein Meaning, I had done the time for the charge before having a trial.
@SenFeinstein When you cooperate with law enforcement, they still detain indefinitely, though Judge Crumbley said they violated my rights.
@SenFeinstein I am one of the people who was imprisoned under the Patriot Act for a year and forced to plea out. I understand your question.
@SenatorReid @ExImBankUS We need for the Senate to address inflation in the budget costs, I will be sending out the inflation scaling.
@SenatorReid @ExImBankUS thanks for the thoughts: however, not passing House bills have made you an obstacle to our recovery
@GrahamBlog I would not mind supplementing security issues with money that we save from #ETChttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1ocpbGsEGdurMv_5XCedlFMbLV8L_6nwd1NlLM4y17XY/edit

@StateDept right here, in the United States, free citizens have been turned into serfs on the #ObamaPlantation with the dollar worth $.33
@SenatorBarb In other words, the money will come from cutting his budget, so get with @BarackObama or @SenJohnMcCain or@JohnKerryUpdate
@SenatorBarb While it is a moderate asking, @BarackObama must take the FBI increases from the $100 billion he can't justify the borrowing.
@mikepfs Now they want us to leave because they are hurt and angry, but the #Taliban revived its brazen attacks on an Iraqi police station.
@mikepfs #Taliban suspended dialogue when it went back on its word, shortly after begging for peace, and we know they are weak.

#Ahmedinejad when we pray, we do not believe wood or stone answers our prayers, but Almighty God Himself, as Jesus is our Grand Intercessor!
#Ahmedinejad how then is #Assad right to kill his own people?
#Ahmedinejad some of the men I know have studied the #Koran and nowhere can they find where Islam can justify killing against Allah's willTea Party Chief@2012_TeaParty
#Ahmedinejad my advice to you is that if you want to avoid bloodshed of your own, control the criminal elements of your society, come to UN!
#Ahmedinejad pre-emptively attacking #Israel is viewed as hostility to the civilized world, not some mumbo jumbo #West #Zionist#conspiracy
#Ahmedinejad we gave you until Monday, I did not hear about the directive until today, and we have not chiseled out funds yet for#Syria
#Ahmedinejad please drop use of #Axis because it reminds us of WWII http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II and our arms are up in prayer http://pic.twitter.com/1vITX8T

It's real simple #Assad if you don't want 2,000 soldiers killed-cease fire against your own people! 230,000 that fled won't come back to you
Perceived aggressiveness is merely a retraction and a defense against #Jihad, and it's denial to permit others to exist. You are not God !!!
Again as with #Israel and #Palestine there must be a resurvey, but we don't want to rule over you, but for you to resolve YOUR OWN PROBLEMS!
#Assad you do not have that much time to delay or hesitate: these are your own people, why should we regard that when they are your own??
What peace has been brokered by #KofiAnnan must be taken: America is not a #ZionistRegime or we'd be dictating the process. STOP THE KILLING

NEUMAN TRIAL DELIBERATION TWEETS:
Tea Party Chief@2012_TeaParty
@wsbtv Not putting Andrea Sneiderman separately on trial does not mean that all evidence has been considered before putting Neuman to death.
@wsbtv Once Neuman is mentally stabilized in 3-5yrs., he can be recharged based on evidence after Andrea Sneiderman has been charged.
@wsbtv Sentencing Neuman to guilty but mentally ill, gives the Prosecution every avenue to exhaust and obtain evidence against Andrea.
@wsbtv Mrs. Sneiderman being charged can then resolve what the court must know about the finances and plotting that her and Neuman did.
@wsbtv Let this be a lesson: stolen water is sweet and can be deadly.
@wsbtv Women produce estrogen in their body: like alcohol, women are a drug that medicates a man. She manipulated her affection likewise!
@wsbtv Mrs. Sneiderman's role contributed to Neuman's illness and she should be held to equal account: once she is charged we have evidence.
@wsbtv Mrs. Sneiderman is trying to cover for Neuman: anyone who had their husband killed would agree that Neuman was a malicious murderer.
@wsbtv Mrs. Sneiderman is a co-conspirator in the death of Rusty, and her children are being taught all the wrong things by her example.
@wsbtv Neuman is surely guilty of murder, but not the malice murder as ascribed by the Prosecution. He is guilty with mental illness.
@wsbtv Yes, he is guilty and his thoughts are insane, but he was not medically insane by medical terminology to be of no account for it.
@wsbtv This does not mean innocence by reason of insanity is a proven defense: no evidence of black out, and he had total recall of it all.
@wsbtv Neuman certainly guilty of murder, but he did not see it as murder, protecting children because his past, but that is not innocence.
@wsbtv The issue was that Neuman did not seek hospitalization on his own volition, to avoid violence, so he must be incarcerated and treated
@wsbtv At any time those overseeing his counseling could have ordered him to inpatient treatment, and they did not do so.
@wsbtv If you can not recognize that you are healthy or unhealthy, then you can not make decisions for yourself. Neuman can't do that.
@wsbtv Neuman could not recognize that he needed to stop: which means, he either has to be put down or put in prison.
@wsbtv Neuman is most certainly guilty as is Andrea Sneiderman, but he was not medically insane by legal definition-though his thoughts were
@wsbtv I agree with prosecution psychiatrist: Neuman could not provide evidence of blackout, not remembering his behavior/or blood tests.
Jury to review Neuman interview with prosecution psychiatrist. The video is 6 hrs long, unclear how much they want to see.
